Entry requirements
  • Four GCSEs at grades 3/D or above, including English and maths or Level 1 Functional skills maths and English
  • Or successful completion of a Level 1 Diploma in a relevant subject plus GCSE English and GCSE maths at grade 3/D or functional skills maths and English at Level 1

NCFE CACHE Level 2 Certificate in Supporting Teaching and Learning.

Course overview

This qualification has been designed to provide learners with an understanding of the knowledge and skills needed when working directly with children and young people in school or college environments. It covers a wide range of areas including children and young people’s development, supporting children and young people’s positive behaviour, communication and professional relationships.

Course content

The diploma requires 11 mandatory units and mandatory placement experience.

Units to include:

  • Equality, diversity and inclusion in a learning environment for children and young people
  • Support positive behavior in children and young people
  • Contribute to teamwork in a learning environment
  • Understand children and young people’s play and leisure
  • Schools, colleges and organisation
  • Support health and safety in the learning environment
  • Understand children and young people’s development
  • Safeguarding children and young people

How will I be assessed?

You will be assessed by your tutor and assessor using a range of methods. This will include direct observation in placement, oral questioning, portfolio of evidence, written assignments or tasks.

What equipment will I need?

  • A current enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) certificate
  • A text book recommended by your tutor and stationery
  • A willingness to travel to your placement (this may on occasion involve two bus journeys)
  • A pack is available on enrolment including two polo shirts for your work placement uniform, a CACHE handbook, an Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) textbook, first aid training and, if required, a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check. The pack costs £150

How much does the course cost?

16 – 18 year olds

Full-time Barnsley College students aged 16-18 years old do not have to pay tuition fees.

19+ Students

English and Maths

Having good English and maths qualifications are important for most careers and we want to give you the help you need to succeed.

If you are aged 16 – 19 and don’t already have a grade C/4 or above in GCSE English and maths they will automatically be included in your study programme. If you want to work towards higher grades in English and maths or a higher level maths qualification we can help you do that too.
