Cleaning and Support Services Level 2 Apprenticeship

Start Date / Duration

You can start an apprenticeship at any time. This programme will take a minimum of 12 months to complete.

Entry requirements
  • Learners will need to be at least 16 years of age and must hold three GCSEs at grade 3/D or above, including GCSE English at grade 3 or above
  • It is desirable that you have maths at grade 4/C or above but this is not essential as Functional Skills is delivered as part of the apprenticeship programme
  • You will need to find an employer to employ you as an apprentice.

You will achieve
  • You will achieve a Level 2 Diploma in Cleaning and Support Services
  • Level 2 Certificate in Cleaning Principles.

Course overview

This Cleaning and Support Services Apprenticeship is the industry’s professional qualification for all skilled cleaners. As an apprentice, you’ll learn a range of cleaning techniques and skills including health and safety, working effectively with customers and others, and communication skills.

Course content

You will study all of the mandatory units and choose from the optional units listed below until you reach a minimum of 18 credits. You will also study:

  • Employment, Rights and Responsibilities (ERR) Booklet
  • Level 1 Functional Skills in English and maths
  • Personal Learning and Thinking Skills (PLTS)

Mandatory Units

  • Reduce the risks to health and safety in the workplace
  • Communicate effectively in the workplace
  • Develop yourself in the job role
  • Work with others and follow reporting procedures in a cleaning environment

Optional Units

  • Clean and maintain internal surfaces and areas
  • Clean and maintain external surfaces and areas
  • Deal with routine waste
  • Clean washrooms and replenish supplies
  • Clean high risk areas
  • Clean confined spaces
  • Clean food areas
  • Deep clean equipment and surfaces
  • Clean, maintain and protect semi-hard and hard floors
  • Clean and maintain soft floors and furnishings
  • Clean glazed surfaces and facades
  • Deal with non-routine waste
  • Carry out maintenance and minor repairs
  • Perform street cleaning manually
  • Perform street cleaning mechanically
  • Work safely at heights
  • Use a water fed pole system to clean windows and facades

How will I be assessed?

You will be assessed by your assessor using a portfolio of evidence, observations in the workplace and assignments. You will be assessed both in college and in your place of work.

What equipment will I need?

Your uniform will be provided your employer. Equipment will be discussed at your induction session.

Where will I study?

You will study within the workplace and attend classes at Barnsley College’s Old Mill Lane Campus, Church Street, Barnsley, S70 2YW.

What can I do next?

Upon completion you could progress onto further study relating to your job role or apply for job roles including:

  • Cleaner / Window Cleaner
  • Handy Person

How much does the course cost?

There is no cost to being an apprentice. All costs associated with your apprenticeship, including the cost of training and your salary, will be paid by your employer.

English and Maths

Having good English and maths qualifications are important for most careers and we want to give you the help you need to succeed.

If you are aged 16 – 19 and don’t already have a grade C/4 or above in GCSE English and maths they will automatically be included in your study programme. If you want to work towards higher grades in English and maths  we can help you do that too.

Need a higher level maths qualification? We offer a Level 3 Mathematical Studies (Core Maths).
