Access to Higher Education: Computing Level 3 Part-time

Entry requirements

You will need to be 19 when the course starts in September 2022.

Entry to the course is by interview. We take a strong interest in previous experience and would love to see or hear about your recent written work and see computer-based or online materials.

GCSE English at grade C/4 or equivalent is desirable.

You will achieve

Access to Higher Education Diploma (Computing) Level 3, awarded by CAVA.

Course overview

The Access to Higher Education course in Computing is perfect if you’d like to go on to study a degree in Computing. In particular, the course is designed for you if you are approaching Higher Education from non-traditional routes without previously getting the qualifications you need. The course has a practical and vocational ethos underpinned by a theoretical and academic foundation that will ensure a smoother route into the world of Higher Education.

The main aims of the programme are to:

  • Develop to a high level of proficiency the skills, techniques and intellectual understanding required for study at undergraduate level.
  • Develop to a high level a broad range of skill-based experiences required for the study of Computing at undergraduate level.

Course content

You will study for two days per week in the SciTech Digital Innovation Hub. You will have access to all the facilities in the hub including our well-equipped computer rooms and our library resources. The course content has been designed to prepare you for progression onto a Computing degree. Within the access course, you will develop skills in relation to academic study as well as the practical and creative skills needed to launch your professional journey.

 

You will study the following units:

·         Computer networks (Level 3 – 9 credits)

·         Programming (Level 3 – 9 credits)

·         System security (Level 3 – 9 credits)

·         Introduction to systems analysis (Level 3 – 6 credits)

·         Spreadsheet modelling (Level 3 – 6 credits)

·         Introduction to web technologies (Level 3 – 6 credits)

·         HE study and presentation skills (Level 3 – 9 credits)

·         Cyber security (Level 3 – 3 credits)

·         Understanding e-commerce (Level 3 – 3 credits)

Assessment is coursework-led and will be project-based throughout the year. Where possible, a variety of assessment methods will be used which includes both written and practical approaches to assignments.

Progression onto the Higher National Certificate/Diploma (HNC/HND) in Computing is available for students gaining a Merit or higher. You could also study another university-level course.

How much does the course cost?

£3,384 per year

Extra information

If you’re undertaking an Access to Higher Education (HE) course and then go on to complete an HE qualification, the outstanding balance of your Advanced Learner Loan will be written off, once you have fully completed both courses.

Having good English and Maths qualifications are important for most careers and we want to give you the help you need to succeed.

If you are aged 16 – 19 and don’t already have a grade C/4 or above in GCSE English and Maths they will automatically be included in your study programme. If you want to work towards higher grades in English and Maths we can help you do that too.
