Five GCSEs at grade 4 or above including English and Maths. Where applicants do not meet the entry requirements, the tutor may use their discretion based on a good personal reference  and/or successful interview.

Course overview

Computing is an exciting and fast-moving field of study, this course will allow you to combine your skills of problem-solving, analysis and creative thinking to come up with solutions for various technological systems.

Computing and computer technology are part of just about everything that touches our lives from the cars we drive, to the movies we watch, to the ways businesses and governments deal with us. Understanding different dimensions of computing is part of the necessary skill set for an educated person in the 21st century. Whether you want to be a scientist, develop the latest killer application, or just know what it really means when someone says “the computer made a mistake”, studying computing will provide you with valuable knowledge.

Having a computing qualification will provide you with a foundation of knowledge, problem solving and logical thinking that will serve as a competitive advantage to you in your career, in whatever field you choose.

The BTEC Diploma and Extended Diploma are structured into specialist pathways so that learners choose a route that relates to a career direction.  This pathway includes an additional mandatory unit that focuses on how the use of IT impacts business systems

Course content

As well as providing you with a better understanding of the practical and technical skills needed for a successful career in IT, this course provides opportunities for students to develop a  range of skills, techniques and personal qualities and attitudes essential for successful performance in an IT and Computing career. If you are interested in learning about general computing and IT subjects, the online world, computing and new technologies, this is the course for you. We will introduce you to the industry, technology systems, mobile app development, hardware and web development and also provide an opportunity for you to engage with software development, coding, networking and information systems and project management.
This course also helps us to ensure that you have the breadth of skills required to progress to apprenticeships, employment or Higher Education.

Course Specifications


The course offers a combination of assessment styles that include assignments set and marked by teachers which may include written work, observed practical tasks and projects. External assessment includes two written exams and two set tasks marked by the awarding body. The range of assessments means that learners can demonstrate their achievement to the best affect when supporting HE applications or to a potential employment.

You will need your own:

  • USB memory stick and Headphones
  • Not essential but you can bring and use your Android/Windows tablet or IPad
  • Having access to a computer at home would be useful, however access to computers is available outside lessons in our learning curve

Having a BTEC Level 3 Qualification in Computing can open up a world of opportunities in both university choices and career options.  If you are considering applying to university to study computer science, games programming, web design, computer forensics, software engineering, animation or any other related subject, then the course is ideal. Or you may wish to seek employment in a computing or IT role. The BTEC Extended Diploma is recognised by both universities and employers as the equivalent of three A levels.

  • Computer Forensics and IT Security
  • Technical Sales or IT Consultant
  • Database Administrator or IT Teacher

How much does the course cost?

16 – 18 year olds

Full-time Barnsley College students aged 16-18 years old do not have to pay tuition fees.

19+ Students

Aged 19 or over and thinking about further education?

Having good English and Maths qualifications are important for most careers and we want to give you the help you need to succeed.

If you are aged 16 – 19 and don’t already have a grade C/4 or above in GCSE English and Maths they will automatically be included in your study programme. If you want to work towards higher grades in English and Maths we can help you do that too.

Need a higher level Maths qualification? We offer a Level 3 Mathematical Studies (Core Maths).
