Entry requirements

Level 1 Certificate

  • Three GCSEs at grade 2/E or above including English

Course overview

Painters and decorators use a range of coverings to enhance and protect surfaces. These surfaces could include plaster, metal and wood. These surfaces could include plaster, metal and wood. Painters and decorators work on a variety of jobs which require a different set of skills and techniques. You could be painting and decorating a house or large commercial buildings. If you like practical work and enjoy being artistic, this could be a perfect career for you. This practical course will equip you with the specialist techniques in painting and decorating.

Course content

Level 1 Certififcate

To achieve the Level 1 Certificate in Painting and Decorating you  must achieve a minimum of 15 credits, 3 credits from the mandatory unit and a minimum of 12 credits from the optional units

Mandatory

  • Introduction to health and safety in construction

Optional

  • Painting techniques
  • Introduction to the construction industry
  • Painting and wallpapering
  • Applying decorative effects
  • Applying wallpaper to internal and external angles and painting skirting
  • Painting a panel door

You will also achieve a level 1 Employability certificate

Level 1 Diploma

To achieve the Level 1 Diploma in Painting and Decorating (6707-13), learners must achieve 41 credits from the mandatory units below.

  • Principles of building construction, information and communication
  • Erecting and dismantling access equipment and working platforms
  • Preparing surfaces for decoration
  • Applying paint systems by brush and roller to non-complex areas
  • Applying foundation and plain papers
  • Producing specialist decorative finishes
  • Health, safety and welfare in construction

How will I be assessed?

Throughout the study programme your work will be assessed for a Pass, Merit or Distinction grade. Achieving this Diploma means that you have reached the standards expected by the industry.

What equipment will I need?

Work boots, gloves and eye protection will need to be purchased prior to starting your course, financial assistance may be available.

What can I do next?

  • Successful completion of this Level 1 Certificate could lead to the level 1 diploma
  • Sucessful completion of level 1 diplomacould lead to onto  the Level 2 study programme.
  • Alternatively, you could use the qualification to improve your chances of gaining an Apprenticeship which will give you valuable work experience.

How much does the course cost?

16 – 18 year olds

Full-time Barnsley College students aged 16-18 years old do not have to pay tuition fees.

19+ Students

Aged 19 or over and thinking about further education?

English and Maths

Having good English and maths qualifications are important for most careers and we want to give you the help you need to succeed.

If you are aged 16 – 19 and don’t already have a grade C/4 or above in GCSE English and maths they will automatically be included in your study programme. If you want to work towards higher grades in English and maths  we can help you do that too.

Need a higher level maths qualification? We offer a Level 3 Mathematical Studies (Core Maths).
