Course overview

You will develop specific skills that will enable you to enter skilled employment within Ceramics and an appreciation of studio pottery or pottery in an industrial setting. You will explore different processes, techniques, tools and materials before specialising in a selected area.

The programme has been developed in collaboration with employers and businesses so the content will meet the needs of industry and prepare students for work. It provides the knowledge and experience needed to open the door to highly skilled employment, an apprenticeship or higher-level study, including university.

Course content

Students will develop an understanding of a broad range of issues relevant to the sector including:
• The creative economy
• The individual in the creative industries
• Cultural context and vocabulary
• Audience and consumer needs
• Legal and regulatory requirements
• Professional standards and conduct in the workplace
• Equality, diversity and inclusion requirements
• Research skills
• Project methodology and administration
• Continued professional development

You will be assessed by coursework and examinations.

An employer-set project will assess the core knowledge learnt during the first year of the programme, including research and design principles contextualised to Craft and Design.

You will require a basic personal and portable kit of materials, equipment and printing at the cost of approximately £130. You will need to buy a kit for each year. Your tutor will advise you further about this.

When you have completed a T Level course, you will be able to choose between moving into:
• Employment in roles such as Ceramics teacher, Ceramics designer Laboratory Technician or Assistant Curator
• Further study including Higher Technical Qualifications or Higher Education
• Higher or degree-level apprenticeships

How much does the course cost?

Full-time Barnsley College students aged 16-18 years old do not have to pay tuition fees.

You don’t have to be studying sport to get involved in the Sports Academy.

Having good English and Maths qualifications are important for most careers and we want to give you the help you need to succeed.

If you are aged 16 – 19 and don’t already have a grade C/4 or above in GCSE English and Maths they will automatically be included in your study programme. If you want to work towards higher grades in English and Maths we can help you do that too.

Need a higher level Maths qualification? We offer a Level 3 Mathematical Studies (Core Maths).
