Entry requirements

  • You will need to be in employment in a dental practice.
  • GCSE English and maths at C grade is desirable.
  • You will normally take part in an interview prior to being enrolled on the programme.

You will achieve

CACHE Level 3 Diploma in Health (Dental Nursing).

Course overview

The qualification focuses on direct chair-side work and support during a range of dental treatments. It encompasses the underpinning ethics, professionalism, teamwork and communication required to work as a dental nurse.

Course content

Core Mandatory Units:

  • Ensure your own actions reduce the risk to health and safety – Mandatory. (2 credits)
  • Reflect on and develop your practice Mandatory (4 credits)
  • Emergency First Aid Skills – Mandatory. (1 credit)
  • Preparing and maintaining environments, instruments, and equipment for clinical dental procedures4

Other mandatory units:

  • Offer information and support to individuals on the protection of their oral health (2 credits)
  • Provide chair side support during the assessment of patients’ oral health (4 credits)
  • Contribute to the production of dental images (1 credit)
  • Provide chair side support during the prevention and control of periodontal disease and caries and the restoration of cavities (3 credits)
  • Provide chair side support during the provision of fixed and removable prostheses (3 credits)
  • Provide chair side support during non-surgical endodontic treatment (4 credits)
  • Provide chair side support during the extraction of teeth and minor oral surgery (2 credits)
  • Principles of infection control in the dental environment (3 credits)
  • Assessment of oral health and treatment planning (5 credits)
  • Dental radiography (3 credits)
  • Scientific principles in the management of oral health diseases and dental procedures (4 credits)
  • Principles and theory of Dental Nursing (written external exam) (5 credits)

Through work based assessments in your work placement and various evidence methods throughout the programme, building up a portfolio.

You will be required to provide paper, writing materials, A4 ring binder file, extra wide dividers and clear plastic wallets. A copy of the standard handbook will be provided and given to you by your assessor on the first visit.
