Design Support Level 2 Apprenticeship

Start Date / Duration

This programme has various start dates throughout the year and will take 12 months to complete.

Entry requirements

  • Learners will need to be at least 16 years of age
  • You must hold three GCSEs at grade A*-C/4
  • It is desirable that you have English, maths and ICT at grade C/4 or above but this is not essential as Functional Skills is delivered as part of the apprenticeship programme
  • You need to be employed within the design and creative industry or have an employer in this area willing to take you on as an apprentice

You will achieve

You will achieve a Level 2 NVQ Certificate in Design Support and a Level 2 Certificate in Design.

Course content

You will study all of the mandatory units from the list below which relate to your job role.

Level 2 NVQ Certificate in Design Support and a Level 2 Certificate in Design.

Mandatory Units:

  • Following design processes
  • Applying techniques and undertaking research to support design
  • Design skills such as writing and interpreting a brief
  • Branding
  • Marketing research
  • Presenting
  • Budgeting

You will also study:

  • Employment, Rights and Responsibilities (ERR) Booklet
  • Level 1 Functional Skills in English, maths and ICT
  • Personal Learning and Thinking Skills (PLTS)

You will be assessed by your assessor using a portfolio of evidence, practical demonstrations and assignments. You will be assessed both in college and in your place of work.

You will need a folder, plastic wallets, dividers and a USB device.

You will study within the workplace and may have to attend classes at Barnsley College’s Old Mill Lane Campus, Church Street, Barnsley S70 2YW.

Upon completion you could progress onto the Level 3 Advanced Apprenticeship in Design or apply for job roles including:

  • Junior Artworker
  • Design Assistant
  • Trainee Technical Illustrator
  • Graphic Design Assistant

How much does the course cost?

There is no cost to being an apprentice. All costs associated with your apprenticeship, including the cost of training and your salary, will be paid by your employer.

Barnsley College has a range of sports opportunities for all students to take part in, gain professional training and compete nationally and internationally. We also have a state-of-the-art fitness village, Honeywell Sports Village where students can make use of our fitness suite, spinning studio and classes for competitive rates. You don’t have to be studying sport to get involved in the Sports Academy.

Having good English and maths qualifications are important for most careers and we want to give you the help you need to succeed.

If you are aged 16 – 19 and don’t already have a grade C/4 or above in GCSE English and maths they will automatically be included in your study programme. If you want to work towards higher grades in English and maths  we can help you do that too.
