Course Overview
DIY Level 1 Part-time (Adult)
In this course, you will learn essential skills for the construction industry and home maintenance. Key areas include plastering, brickwork and joinery. You will also study Health and Safety. Every four weeks, you will rotate through each trade, developing practical skills taught by industry specialists. By the end, you will be able to perform basic brickwork, plastering, and joinery repairs, and select the correct tools and materials for various domestic repairs.
You will carry out practical tasks and assessments in the following topics:

Bricklaying
Plastering
Joinery

Part-time courses are only available for students who are 19 years old and above. You may not have to pay for this course if you are employed but earn below £23,400 a year, or if you are unemployed and receive Job Seekers Allowance, Employment and Support Allowance or Universal Credit. You will need to provide evidence of your eligibility and this will be required at enrolment.
This course is funded by South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority (SYMCA) and/or West Yorkshire Combined Authority (WYCA). You must be living in the South or West Yorkshire regions to qualify for funding.
Course Content
No formal qualifications are required.
A keen interest in DIY and construction and a willingness to learn new skills would be advantageous.
Maths will be developed carrying out measurements and working out the volume of materials needed.
Health and Safety is embedded in to every activity.
You will carry out practice tasks that simulate real working environments using industry practice and materials. You will be assessed by completing practical competence based tasks marked against industry tolerances for each trade. You will also complete a Level 1 Health and Safety test.
You can continue on to a Level 2 qualification in Brickwork, Plastering or Joinery trade, progress into employment as a caretaker/handyperson or apply to be an adult apprentice. You can also on to a Level 2 Plaster Skimmer course.

Having good English and Maths qualifications are important for most careers and we want to give you the help you need to succeed.
If you are aged 16 - 19 and don't hold a grade C/4 or above in GCSE English and Maths, you will automatically be included in your study programme. If you want to work towards achieving a higher grade in English and Maths, we can help you do that too and we offer Level 3 Mathematical Studies (Core Maths) which maybe added to your study programme, subject to approval from your chosen department.
If you're aged 19 or above and don't hold a grade C/4 or above in GCSE English and Maths we can help. We offer FREE English and Maths qualifications that can be studied on a part-time basis, subject to eligibility.
