Entry requirements

  • A Level 3 qualification in Engineering (such as a BTEC, T Level or Access to Higher Education) and
  • GCSE Maths at a grade 4/C or above
  • Experience of working within Engineering would be beneficial
  • All applicants will be considered on an individual basis

Course overview

The Higher National Certificate in Engineering (General Engineering) has been designed to allow you to develop broad knowledge of the subject area through core units of learning. In addition, optional units allow you to specialise and pursue particular interests within Engineering. This course has the flexibility of allowing you to step off and move into employment, or continue your studies with a Higher National Diploma.

This course is delivered as part of the South Yorkshire Institute of Technology (SYIoT).

Course content

This course will develop your skills and knowledge in Engineering while also preparing you for more intense subject specialisation at a higher level. You will gain a wide range of sector knowledge and practical skills through research, self-study, directed study and workplace activities.

In the Higher National Certificate you will study four core units, which includes a unit assessed by a Pearson-set assignment.

The core units are:

  • Unit 1: Engineering Design
  • Unit 2: Engineering Maths
  • Unit 3: Engineering Science
  • Unit 4: Managing a Professional Engineering Project (Pearson-set assignment unit)

You will also study four additional units:

  • Unit 5: Renewable Energy
  • Unit 8: Mechanical Principles
  • Unit 19: Electrical and Electronic Principles
  • Unit 22: Electronic Circuits and Devices

On completion of this course you will be able to demonstrate sound knowledge of the basic concepts of engineering. You will be able to communicate accurately and appropriately, developing a range of transferrable skills, such as team working, independent working and problem-solving. You will also demonstrate regard for the ethical responsibilities of the engineer, understanding the importance of sustainability.

You will be assessed through coursework and assignments. Once unit is an internally assessed Pearson-set unit.

How much does the course cost?

This course costs £2995 per year. You can apply for a tuition fee loan to pay for this course.

Extra information

We offer a service to any  student who has a diagnosis of anything persistent or long-term which might interfere with how they study and manage their day-to- day academic engagement. The service is flexible and shaped around the needs of each individual; it might be consistent support or intermittent support.

Students with children or dependant adults may qualify for a Childcare Grant or Adult Dependants’ Grant. Students can apply for these at the same time as applying for a Maintenance Loan.

Remember: Eligible students will not have to pay tuition fees in advance and can apply for the Maintenance Loan before they start the course.
