English Functional Skills (Digital)

In Brief

Start Date / Duration

The course will commence from September 2022. The classes are three hours split into 2 classes of 1.5 hours each. Delivery will be online via a suitable online platform. All details will be provided at your initial assessment. You will be required to attend College for an initial assessment, mock and final examinations.

Entry requirements

  • Students must be aged 19+ years of age. Learners aged 16-18 will do Maths and English as part of their full-time study programme
  • No formal entry requirements or previous experience is necessary to undertake these programmes
  • Before you start, you will undergo an initial and diagnostic assessment to identify which particular skills you need to work on and the relevant units from this suite

You will achieve

Functional Skills English qualification.

Course overview

The qualification is available for Levels 1 and 2. It contains a range of units which develop maths and English skills needed in work and life.

These programmes are flexible. If you want to improve your reading, writing and numeracy skills, or want to gain a qualification for the skills you already have, a Skills for Life qualification could be for you. Functional Skills qualifications are designed to help you develop the skills you use in everyday life, such as reading and writing. They can also help you boost your CV or move on to further study.

Functional skills classes run throughout the year. You will need an assessment to determine the level you start at.

Digital/online learning means studying remotely, allowing you to learn in your own time, wherever you choose. Using a range of material you’ll undertake course activities and assignments with regular support from your tutor, interacting with fellow students via email, online forums, phone and virtual conferencing.

Course content

These courses help you gain confidence in everyday reading, writing, and speaking.  You can develop your spelling and the skills needed for tasks such as form filling and writing short notes.

You will sit an examination at the end of the course.

You will need access to a computer with an internet connection.

How much does the course cost?

This course is fully funded for anyone aged 19 or over who lives in South Yorkshire. For applicants who live outside this area, the full cost of the course is £500.
