English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) for Adults Part-time

Start Date / Duration

ESOL courses start in September and finish at the end of June. You will study 7½ hours per week and you should be able to fit this around any work or family commitments.

Entry requirements
  • There are no formal entry requirements or previous experience needed to join this course.
  • Before you start a class you need to do an assessment to find your level.  Assessments take place on Wednesday afternoons at our Old Mill Lane site from 2pm-3pm. No appointment necessary.
  • You should be aged 19 or over to attend this course.
You will achieve

You will achieve the City & Guilds (4692) ESOL Skills for Life qualification in Speaking and Listening at Entry 1, Entry 2 or Entry 3.

Course overview

 ESOL Skills for Life qualifications support speakers of other languages based within the UK to develop their English language skills for work, further learning or everyday life.

These qualifications are for anyone based in the UK needing to improve their understanding and use of written or spoken English. This might be to help get on at work (or get a job), prepare for further study, access public services, or just to function more effectively in an English-speaking environment.

Available at three levels: Entry 1, Entry 2 and Entry 3.


Course content

ESOL learners will develop and improve their language skills in speaking, listening, reading and writing.

They will encounter topics which are both familiar and relevant to them. Topics include:

  • personal details/experiences
  • work
  • education/training
  • housing
  • family and friends
  • health
  • transport
  • weather
  • buying goods
  • leisure
  • UK society

What equipment will I need?

It would be helpful if you brought some pens, paper to write on and a folder to put your work in.

This can lead to more advanced ESOL courses at the College or progression onto higher level mainstream courses.
