Start Date / Duration

Apprenticeships can start at any time. This programme will take a minimum of 24 months to complete.

Entry requirements
  • You will need to be at least 16 years of age and must have completed the level 2 Intermediate Apprenticeship in Fabrication and Welding.
  • You must also hold four GCSEs at grade 4/C or above including GCSE English (grade 4 or above) and maths (grade 5 or above)
  • You will need to find an employer to employ you as an apprentice. Please see our Apprenticeship vacancies.

  • Level 3 NVQ in Fabrication and Welding
  • Level 3 BTEC Diploma in Engineering
  • Advanced Apprenticeship Certificate

Course overview

This apprenticeship has been designed for learners who deal with general fabricated items within their roles. This could range from ductwork and canopies for hotel kitchens to structural components such as off shore oil platforms and subsea components.

Course content

There are seven pathways available. You and your employer will choose the pathway you will study. You will then study all of the mandatory units and choose from the optional units relating to your job role.

They are;

  •  Manual Welding
  • Pathway B: Welding Machine Setting and Operating
  • Sheet Metalworking (3mm or less)
  • Plateworking (3mm Upwards)
  • Pipe and Tube Fabrication
  • Structural Steelwork

You will also study:

  • Employment, Rights and Responsibilities (ERR) booklet
  • Level 2 Functional Skills in English, Maths and ICT
  • Personal Learning and Thinking Skills (PLTS)

How will I be assessed?

You will be assessed by your assessor using a portfolio of evidence, practical demonstrations and assignments. You will be assessed both in College and in your place of work.

What equipment will I need?

You will be required to provide paper, writing materials, A4 ring binder file, extra wide dividers and clear plastic wallets.

Where will I study?

You will study within the workplace and attend classes at Barnsley College’s (STEM) Science Technology Engineering and Maths Centre, Old Mill Lane, Barnsley, S70 2LA.

What can I do next?

Upon completion you could progress onto the Higher Apprenticeship in Engineering Technology or apply for job roles including:

  • Technical Support Assistant

How much does the course cost?

There is no cost to being an apprentice. All costs associated with your apprenticeship, including the cost of training and your salary, will be paid by your employer.

English and Maths

Having good English and maths qualifications are important for most careers and we want to give you the help you need to succeed.

If you are aged 16 – 19 and don’t already have a grade C/4 or above in GCSE English and maths they will automatically be included in your study programme. If you want to work towards higher grades in English and maths or a higher level maths qualification we can help you do that too.
