Functional Skills English and Maths: Intensive Short Courses

Intensive English and maths courses run from Monday 17 June until Friday 28 June 2019. The courses will run over two weeks with the option to continue if required.

Entry requirements
  • No formal entry requirements or previous experience is necessary to undertake these programmes
  • Before you start, you will undergo an initial and diagnostic assessment to identify which particular skills you need to work on and the relevant units from this suite

Assessments will run on a Monday, between 1pm and 6pm. The latest assessment date for this intensive course will be Monday 10 June 2019.

Course overview

Barnsley College is offering free English and maths courses for anyone wanting to increase their reading, writing and numeracy skills.

The free functional skills courses are offered from Entry Level to Level 2 where students will develop essential skills and knowledge in a range of topics including spelling, form filling, note writing, interpreting numbers and dealing with money. This knowledge will help them to operate confidently in everyday life and gain confidence in their reading, writing, speaking and numeracy skills.

Course content

The attendance pattern is as follows:

Week 1: Monday-Friday: Maths 10am-12pm, English 12.30pm-2.30pm.

Week 2: Monday-Thursday: Maths 10am-12pm, English 12.30pm-2.30pm.

**Exams will take place on  Friday 28 June 2019**

Functional Skills Maths                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                        Functional skills qualifications in mathematics assess three inter related process skills:

  • Representing: selecting the mathematics and information to model a situation
  • Analysing: processing and using mathematics
  • Interpreting: interpreting and communicating the results of the analysis

Functional Skills English                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                  These courses help you gain confidence in everyday reading, writing, and speaking.  You can develop your spelling and the skills needed for tasks such as form filling and writing short notes.



How will I be assessed?

You will sit an examination at the end of the course on either Thursday 27 June or Friday 28 June. Learners who find they are not ready can continue with the functional skills qualifications as normal.

You will require writing materials and a ring binder.
