Hairdressing Level 3 Apprenticeship

In Brief

Start Date / Duration

You may start an Apprenticeship at any time. This programme will take a minimum of 12 months to complete.

Entry requirements
  • Three GCSEs at grade4/C or above including English and maths plus Level 2 in Hairdressing
  • You will need to be at least 16 years of age
  • You will need to find an employer to employ you as an apprentice. Please see our Apprenticeship vacancies.

You will achieve a Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Hairdressing Framework.

Course overview

This apprenticeship gives you the knowledge and practical experience to progress your career as a Hairdresser.

Course content

You will study all the mandatory units and chose from the optional units listed below until you reach a minimum of 68 credits. You will also study:

  • Employment, Rights and Responsibilities (ERR) Booklet
  • Level 2 Functional Skills in English and maths
  • Personal Learning and Thinking Skills (PLTS)

Mandatory Units

  • Creatively style and dress hair
  • Creatively cut hair using a combination of techniquesCreatively colour and lighten hair
  • Provide client consultation services

Optional Units

  • Hair colour correction services
  • Develop, enhance and evaluate your creative hairdressing skills
  • Contribute to the financial effectiveness of the business

How will I be assessed?

You will be assessed by your assessor using a portfolio of evidence, practical demonstrations and assignments. You will be assessed both in college and in your place of work.

What equipment will I need?

You will need to purchase a Hairdressing kit. Further information will be provided at induction.

Where will I study?

You will study within the workplace and may have to attend classes at Barnsley College’s Old Mill Lane Campus, Church Street, Barnsley, S70 2YW.

What can I do next?

Upon completion you could progress onto the Level 2 Intermediate Apprenticeship in Barbering or apply for job roles including Stylist or Hairdresser.

How much does the course cost?

There is no cost to being an apprentice. All costs associated with your apprenticeship, including the cost of training and your salary, will be paid by your employer.

English and Maths

Having good English and maths qualifications are important for most careers and we want to give you the help you need to succeed.

If you are aged 16 – 19 and don’t already have a grade C/4 or above in GCSE English and maths they will automatically be included in your study programme. If you want to work towards higher grades in English and maths or a higher level maths qualification we can help you do that too.
