Health and Social Care: Awareness of Dementia Care Level 2 Distance Learning

This course has various start times throughout the year The Level 2 Award in Awareness of Dementia can be completed in one to two days and Level 2 Certificate in Dementia Care can be completed in two to six weeks.

Entry requirements

It would be helpful if you have a Level 1 qualification in healthcare, social care, childcare or supporting learning.

For the Level 2 Certificate in Dementia Care you should be employed in a suitable setting, or undertake suitable voluntary work experience, to meet the assessment criteria.

You will achieve
  • NCFE/CACHE Level 2 Award in Awareness of Dementia; and/or
  • NCFE/CACHE Level 2 Certificate in Dementia Care.

Course overview

This qualification aims to develop the knowledge and skills required when providing positive care for people with dementia and their families. The Level 2 Award provides an awareness of the causes and symptoms of dementia. The Level 2 Certificate allows you to build on the knowledge gained from the Award, whilst also developing skills that are needed in the workplace when working under supervision.

The Level 2 Award in Awareness of Dementia is a requirement for anyone wishing to work in a dementia care setting. This qualification aims to develop your knowledge and awareness of dementia. It is aimed at students in school or college, or those working for local authorities or private commercial homeowners.
In the Level 2 Certificate in Dementia Care you will develop an understanding and awareness of the causes and symptoms of dementia, allowing for progression to Level 2 and Level 3 Health and Social Care qualifications and into employment in social care settings.

These qualifications are aligned to the National Dementia Strategy. These qualifications do not qualify you to work in social care settings, but do support you working towards employment or to aid career development if you are a social care qualified practitioner.

Course content

Level 2 Award units

  • Dementia awareness
  • The person-centred approach to the care and support of individuals with dementia
  • Understand the factors that can influence communication and interaction with individuals who have dementia
  • Understand equality, diversity and inclusion in dementia care

Level 2 Certificate units:

  • Understand and meet the nutritional requirements of individuals with dementia
  • Understand the administration of medication to individuals with dementia using a person- centred approach
  • Support use of medication in social care settings
  • Contribute to the support of positive risk-taking for individuals
  • Contribute to the care of a deceased person
  • Provide support for therapy sessions
  • Contribute to supporting group care activities
  • Support individuals at the end of life
  • Facilitate person-centred assessment, planning, implementation and review
  • Support person-centred thinking and planning
  • Introductory awareness of models of disability
  • Contribute to supporting individuals in the use of assistive technology
  • Understand mental well-being and mental health promotion
  • Purpose and principles of Independent Advocacy
  • Independent Mental Capacity Advocacy

 

How will I be assessed?

You will be assessed using a range of methods which could include direct observation, a portfolio of evidence, written assignments or a task.

What can I do next?

This qualification does not qualify you to work but supports your professional development, either in your current or future job roles. It provides progression to a number of qualifications including a Level 2 Diploma in Health and Social Care or Level 3 Dementia Care qualifications.
The Dementia Care units are also available as optional units in the Level 2 Diploma in Health and Social Care and the Level 3 Certificate in Dementia Care, meaning credits can be carried over without the need to repeat learning.
Progression to the following job roles may be possible:

  • Care Assistant, Support Worker, Senior Support Worker or Key Worker in residential settings
  • Support Worker in community and primary care environments
  • Care Assistant, Support Worker, Key Worker in domiciliary services
