Course overview

This qualification will develop your understanding of methods of preventing and controlling infection, your awareness of the causes of infection and how these factors can be managed and controlled. It has been specifically designed for the health and social care sector and covers preventing the spread of infection, cleaning and waste disposal processes and current legislation.

This course is suitable for anyone wanting to work as health care assistants, health care workers or social care workers in local authority or private care environments.

Course content

To gain the Award you must achieve seven credits from the mandatory units listed below:

  • The Principles of Infection and Prevention Control
  • Causes and Spread of Infection
  • Cleaning, Decontamination and Waste Management


How will I be assessed?

All units will be individually internally assessed using a range of methods which could include written assignments or tasks such as designing a leaflet or booklet, charts or diagrams or setting up an information board. The qualification will be pass or refer and all assessment criteria for the unit must be achieved in order to obtain a pass.

What equipment will I need?

No equipment is needed.

You can study either in your place of work or at Barnsley College.

What can I do next?

This qualification supports your professional development, either in your current or future job roles. It provides progression onto Level 2 Health and Social Care qualifications or employment in adult social care and childcare settings.

The units of the Level 2 Award are embedded in the Level 2 Diploma in Health and Social Care. You could therefore progress directly on to the diploma, which would allow you to register on the Health and Social Care apprenticeship.

Progression to the following job roles may be possible:

  • Care Assistant
  • Support Worker
  • Senior Support Worker
  • Key Worker in residential settings.
