Healthcare Clinical Support Level 2 Apprenticeship

In Brief

Start Date / Duration

This is a flexible programme and can start at various times throughout the year and will take a minimum of 12 months to complete.

Entry requirements
  • You will need to be at least 16 years of age
  • Three GCSEs at grade 3/D or above plus GCSE English and GCSE maths at grade 3/D or above or Level 1 Functional Skills in English and maths
  • You will need to find an employer to employ you as an apprentice.

  • As your programme may involve working with children, you will be required to undertake a satisfactory Disclosure Barring Service (DBS) check

You will achieve a Level 2 Intermediate Diploma in Clinical Healthcare Support.

Course overview

This apprenticeship provides the skills and knowledge needed to support doctors, nurses, allied health professionals and healthcare scientists when they provide healthcare.

Course content

You will study all the mandatory units listed below and chose from optional units these will depend upon your job role. You will also study:

  • Employment, Rights and Responsibilities (ERR) Booklet
  • Level 2 Functional Skills in English, maths and ICT (if required)
  • Personal Learning and Thinking Skills (PLTS)

Mandatory Units

  • Introduction to personal development in health, social care or children’s and young people’s settings
  • Introduction to communication in health, social care or children’s and young people’s settings
  • Introduction to duty of care in health, social care or children’s and young people’s settings
  • Introduction to equality and inclusion in health, social care or children’s and young people’s settings
  • The role of the health and social care worker
  • Contribute to health and safety in health and social care
  • The principles of infection prevention and control
  • Causes and spread of infection
  • Implement person centred approaches in health and social care
  • Principles of safeguarding and protection in health and social care
  • Handle information in health and social care settings

Optional units

Optional units will be discussed on commencement of this programme.


How will I be assessed?

You will be assessed by your assessor using a portfolio of evidence, practical demonstrations and assignments. You will be assessed both in college and in your place of work.

What equipment will I need?

You will need a folder, plastic wallets, dividers and a USB device.

Where will I study?

You will study within the workplace and may have to attend classes at Barnsley College’s Sci-Tech Centre, Falcon Street, Barnsley, S70 2EY.

What can I do next?

Upon completion you could progress onto the Clinical Healthcare Support Level 3 Advanced Apprenticeship or apply for job roles working within healthcare departments including:

  • Neurophysiology
  • Audiology
  • Cardiology
  • Respiratory
  • GI Physiology

How much does the course cost?

There is no cost to being an apprentice. All costs associated with your apprenticeship, including the cost of training and your salary, will be paid by your employer.

English and Maths

Having good English and maths qualifications are important for most careers and we want to give you the help you need to succeed.

If you are aged 16 – 19 and don’t already have a grade C/4 or above in GCSE English and maths they will automatically be included in your study programme. If you want to work towards higher grades in English and maths  we can help you do that too.

Need a higher level maths qualification? We offer a Level 3 Mathematical Studies (Core Maths).
