Start Date / Duration

You can start an Apprenticeship at any time. You will study for 24 months.

Entry requirements
  • Functional or Key skills Level 2 or GCSEs at grade A*-C [1-4], in English and maths is desirable but not essential.
  • Apprentices without Level 2 English and Maths will need to achieve this level prior to completion of the apprenticeship.

Course overview

The healthcare science associate supports the work of the healthcare science practitioners and clinical scientists in performing high quality, safe diagnostic, therapeutic and monitoring technical and scientific procedures from conception to end of life.  The roles within the hospital, general practice or other settings means the healthcare science associate performs a wide range of routine technical and scientific procedures, with minimal supervision.  Please see link below:

Course content

Consistently working to the standards of good scientific practice you will:

How will I be assessed?

Your assessor will make appointments for planned observation visits in the workplace. You will also complete an end point assessment.  This is to measure your skills, knowledge and behaviours as set out in the apprenticeship standard.

What equipment will I need?

You will need access to a mobile phone, internet, laptop or mobile tablet.

Where will I study?

You will study either in your place or work and/or attend monthly workshop sessions at Barnsley College run by an experienced assessor.

What can I do next?

On successful completion of this apprenticeship you will be a competent and job-ready Healthcare Scientist. Progression to Level 5 and Level 6 qualifications related to your job role is an option after a period of working and gaining experience.

How much does the course cost?

There is no cost to being an apprentice. All costs associated with your apprenticeship, including the cost of training and your salary, will be paid by your employer.

English and Maths

Having good English and maths qualifications are important for most careers and we want to give you the help you need to succeed.

If you are aged 16 – 19 and don’t already have a grade C/4 or above in GCSE English and maths they will automatically be included in your study programme. If you want to work towards higher grades in English and maths or a higher level maths qualification we can help you do that too.
