Engineering: Higher National Certificate/Higher Level Apprenticeship (Part-time)

This course runs for two years, part-time, one day per week.

Entry requirements

For learners 18+ years of age, who have recently been in education, the profile is likely to include one of the following:

  • 32 UCAS Tariff Points from at least 2 GCSE ‘A’ Level with supporting GCSEs at grade 4 or above (A–C) in appropriate English, Maths and Science or Technology subjects.
  • BTEC National Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma (M) plus NVQ Level 3 trade qualifications with supporting GCSEs at grade 4 or above (A–C) in appropriate English, Maths and Science or Technology subjects.
  • BTEC National Level 3 Diploma (MP) with supporting GCSEs at grade 4 or above (A–C) in appropriate English, Maths and Science or Technology subjects.

Mature entrants with previous experience may be recognised through Accreditation of Prior Learning (APL)

Course overview

The BTEC Higher National Certificate in Engineering is designed to enhance career prospects in the Engineering industry. The qualification is offered on both a part-time day release basis over two years and as part of the Higher Apprenticeship over two years.

You must complete eight units in total. Four mandatory and four from a specialist pathway.

The teaching team will choose the optional units.

Unit Assessment

The assessment will be through a series of assignments, presentations, timed assessments and projects that will enable you to provide evidence of meeting the assessment criteria.

To achieve a Pass grade for the unit, learners must meet the assessment criteria set out in the specification. Additional assessment criteria are required to achieve Merit and Distinction grades.

 Course grade

Your course will be graded depending on the assessment grades that you achieve and these course points are converted to a final overall grade per module.

Academic progression

Academic progression is typically as shown below:

  • Level 5 HND Engineering (Two years part-time or one year full-time)
  • Level 6 Part-time degree course
  • Level 6 Full-time degree course

 

 

How much does the course cost?

Course fees: £2,995 per year

Extra information

We offer a service to any  student who has a diagnosis of anything persistent or long-term which might interfere with how they study and manage their day-to- day academic engagement. The service is flexible and shaped around the needs of each individual; it might be consistent support or intermittent support.

A Maintenance Loan of up to £6,904 per year will be available to eligible students living with parents or up to £8,200 per year to those living away from home. EU Students cannot apply.

Students with children or dependant adults may qualify for a Childcare Grant or Adult Dependants’ Grant. Students can apply for these at the same time as applying for a Maintenance Loan.

Remember: Eligible students will not have to pay tuition fees in advance and can apply for the Maintenance Loan before they start the course.
