  • Five GCSEs at grades 4/C or above, including English Language and maths.
  • A good personal reference.

  • Progression from Foundation Diploma in Information Technology (you will go straight onto the second year)

Course overview

Information Technology (IT) is an exciting and fast-moving field of study. This course builds on the Foundation Diploma in IT and includes exciting and up to date content, allowing you to learn and be assessed in ways that are practical and relevant to the IT Sector.

The units are designed to give you an insight into the varied careers in computing and IT, helping you to identify areas of interest and your future specialism for progression to Higher Education, apprenticeships or employment.

Course content

The Extended Diploma consists of variety of units completed over two years and includes a wide range of IT topics. Units are designed to give you an insight into the varied careers in computing and IT, helping you to identify areas of interest and your future specialism.

The learning programme blends technical and academic skills that are valued by Higher Education (HE) institutions and the workplace. You will take part in coursework, online learning, presentations, demonstrations and practical work.

  • Computer Systems
  • Mobile Technology
  • Games Design
  • Product Development
  • Cloud Technology
  • Virtual and Augmented Reality
  • Enterprise Computing

Your programme will include tutorials, trips, visits and enrichment activities.

How will I be assessed?

The course offers a combination of assessment styles that include assignments set and marked by teachers which may include written work, observed practical tasks and projects.

External assessment includes written exams marked by the awarding body. The range of assessments means that you can demonstrate your achievement when supporting HE applications or to a potential employer.

What equipment will I need?

You will need your own:

  • USB memory stick and Headphones
  • Not essential but you can bring and use your Android/Windows tablet or IPad
  • Having access to a computer at home would be useful, however access to computers is available outside lessons in our learning curve

Having a BTEC Level 3 Qualification in IT can open up a world of opportunities in both university choices and career options. This course is ideal if you wish to progress onto HE within an IT related area such as Digital Technology, Creative Technology and Business Information Systems.

How much does the course cost?

16 – 18 year olds

Full-time Barnsley College students aged 16-18 years old do not have to pay tuition fees.

19+ Students

Aged 19 or over and thinking about further education?

You may be eligible for free or reduced course fees . Please refer to our page ‘paying for your course.’

English and Maths

Having good English and maths qualifications are important for most careers and we want to give you the help you need to succeed.

If you are aged 16 – 19 and don’t already have a grade C/4 or above in GCSE English and maths they will automatically be included in your study programme. If you want to work towards higher grades in English and maths or a higher level maths qualification we can help you do that too.
