Entry requirements

You will need to gain four GCSEs at grade 2/E or above including English and maths along with a good reference from your school.

You will achieve

Once completed to a satisfactory standard you will achieve the BTEC Level 1 Introductory Diploma in Information Technology.

Course overview

If you want to develop your own IT skills rather than specific computing or IT knowledge, then this is the course for you. This course covers a wide range of topics which will help you progress onto further study or enter the workplace.

Level 1 course specifications

How will I be assessed?

The units are assessed using various assignments and continually assessed. There are no external examinations.

What equipment will I need?

You will require a USB Flash Drive of 8gb along with a folder and paper, pens and pencil. Access to a computer with Internet connection is also required but is available in all classes and in the learning curve at College.

What can I do next?

Upon completion, you could progress onto further qualifications including the BTEC First Extended Certificate in Information and Creative Technology or an Intermediate Apprenticeship in Computing. Alternatively, you could train to be a Technician.

How much does the course cost?

16 – 18 year olds

Full-time Barnsley College students aged 16-18 years old do not have to pay tuition fees.

19+ Students

Aged 19 or over and thinking about further education?

You may be eligible for free or reduced course fees . Please refer to our page ‘paying for your course.’

English and Maths

Having good English and maths qualifications are important for most careers and we want to give you the help you need to succeed.

If you are aged 16 – 19 and don’t already have a grade C/4 or above in GCSE English and maths they will automatically be included in your study programme. If you want to work towards higher grades in English and maths or a higher level maths qualification we can help you do that too.
