  • Five GCSEs at grades 4/C or above including English and maths

Course overview

Information Technology (IT) has a significant role in the world around us. You will be able to develop the knowledge, skills and understanding required for the new and emerging technologies in the IT and Computing Sector.

This one-year course provides an excellent start in IT. You will study a wide range of topics that provide a strong base for progression to the Extended Diploma in IT, apprenticeships or employment.

Cambridge Technicals in IT allows students to gain an insight into IT and cybersecurity. A wide range of units and pathways provide students with practical and project-based opportunities to develop knowledge and skills in areas such as infrastructure, application development and data analysis

Course content

The Foundation Diploma consists of variety of units completed over one year and includes a wide range of IT topics. Units are designed to give you an insight into the varied careers in Computing and IT, helping you to identify areas of interest and your future specialism. The learning programme blends technical and academic skills. You will take part in coursework, online learning, presentations, demonstrations and practical work.

 Units may include:

  • Information technology systems
  • Creating systems to manage data
  • Mobile apps development
  • IT project management
  • Computer networking


The course offers a combination of assessment styles that include assignments set and marked by teachers which may include written work, observed practical tasks and projects.

External assessment includes written papers set and marked by the awarding body. The range of assessments means you can demonstrate your achievement when supporting applications for further study or to a potential employer.

You will need your own USB memory stick and headphones. You can bring and use your own Android/Windows tablet or iPad in classes.

Having access to a computer at home would be useful, however you can access computers outside lessons in the College’s Learning Curve.

You may choose to continue onto a second year and top up to the Extended Diploma in IT or progress to other further study. Alternatively, you may wish to progress to employment or apply for an apprenticeship.

How much does the course cost?

16 – 18 year olds

Full-time Barnsley College students aged 16-18 years old do not have to pay tuition fees.

19+ Students

Aged 19 or over and thinking about further education?
