Entry requirements

Individual employers will set the selection criteria, but this might include five GCSEs and/or A levels; a Level 2 Apprenticeship; other relevant qualifications and experience; or an aptitude test with a focus on functional maths.

Course overview

Could you Deliver the Right Digital Skills needed for today’s IT Organisations? If that’s a Yes, Come and join our IT Solutions Technician Apprenticeship.

IT Solutions Technicians develop, implement and maintain complete IT solutions, including their hardware infrastructure (such as servers and networks) and software (such as operating systems, middleware and applications).

Working as part of a multi-disciplinary team, learners will be expected to take part and support the entire solution lifecycle: requirements gathering, solution development, testing, implementation and ongoing support.

Course content

An IT Solutions Technician applies a professional methodology or framework to gather and analyse requirements; to design, develop, test, and implement IT solutions and to provide ongoing support both directly to end users and for the underlying IT services.

The specific tasks undertaken vary depending on what needs to be achieved by the team at any particular time. Some tasks may be very technical, others may be more analytical, business or user focused.

This programme is designed to provide the knowledge and skills to develop, implement and maintain complete IT solutions and offers two pathways that provide the underpinning knowledge and skills in either a Hardware Solutions role (fixed or mobile) or a Software Solutions role (supporting applications and components).

As a result, both pathways within this programme will include a core set of common knowledge requirements and skills, including:

  • Solution Life-cycles and Development Methodologies
  • Approaches and Benefits to DevOps
  • End User Understanding
  • Solution Testing
  • Networking and Computer Systems
  • Emerging Technologies
  • IT Security
  • Cloud Computing

On Programme Assessment will include a mixture of:

  • Practical demonstrations
  • Work based projects
  • Written assessments
  • Portfolio
  • Observations
  • End Point Assessment

You will need to provide your own writing materials and a USB stick.

You can progress onto higher level degree and/or apprenticeship study or apply for a vast array of digital roles that include:

IT Solutions Technician, Technical Analyst, Junior Support Analyst, IT Support Analyst, Systems Analyst, IT Technical Support, IT Systems Support Technician, Junior DevOps Professional, IT Service Desk or Technical Service Support (at 2nd, 3rd or 4th line support)

How much does the course cost?

There is no cost to being an apprentice. All costs associated with your apprenticeship, including the cost of training and your salary, will be paid by your employer.

Having good English and maths qualifications are important for most careers and we want to give you the help you need to succeed.

If you are aged 16 – 19 and don’t already have a grade C/4 or above in GCSE English and maths they will automatically be included in your study programme. If you want to work towards higher grades in English and maths  we can help you do that too.

Need a higher level maths qualification? We offer a Level 3 Mathematical Studies (Core Maths).
