Laboratory and Science Technician Level 3 Apprenticeship

Start Date / Duration

This course has various start times throughout the year, you will attend college one day per week. You will study for 18-24 months.

Entry requirements
  • You will need to provide evidence of a recent DBS disclosure check.
  • You will need to be employed within a laboratory setting or have an employer in the area willing to take you on as an apprentice.

  • Apprentices without Level 2 English and maths will need to achieve this qualification prior to completion of the course. This can be studied alongside this apprenticeship.

Course overview

Laboratory technicians work in a wide range of organisations including chemical, primary and secondary pharmaceutical, biotechnology, formulated products, nuclear companies; and analytical science services. A laboratory technician may carry out both routine and one-off laboratory testing and perform a variety of technical support functions across the organisation. Please see link:

Course content

There are two phases of training. The first is the Foundation Phase which typically lasts one to nine months and will focus on developing your core skills, relating to knowledge and behaviours, specifically around working safely, complying with internal and external regulations and following quality procedures.
The second phase is the Consolidation Phase which is typically 10 to 18 months, this will focus on developing further skills and capability. It will be supported by further guided learning, enabling you to eventually work effectively and independently with minimum supervision. You will work towards a BTEC Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma in Applied Science (QCF), which is recognised by a professional body as suitable for registration for RsciTech.
A formal end assessment is completed in the final three months based on a synoptic assessment test (SAT) in the workplace. The apprenticeship award will be achieved on passing all elements of the formal end assessment.

How will I be assessed?

Your assessor will make appointments for observation visits in the workplace. You will also need to complete the end point assessment as explained in the course description.

What can I do next?

On successful completion of this apprenticeship you will be a competent and job-ready Laboratory Technician.
Progression to Level 3 qualifications related to your job role is an option after a period of working and gaining experience, you may be able to work towards a senior post or further study.

How much does the course cost?

There is no cost to being an apprentice. All costs associated with your apprenticeship, including the cost of training and your salary, will be paid by your employer.

English and Maths

Having good English and maths qualifications are important for most careers and we want to give you the help you need to succeed.

If you are aged 16 – 19 and don’t already have a grade C/4 or above in GCSE English and maths they will automatically be included in your study programme. If you want to work towards higher grades in English and maths or a higher level maths qualification we can help you do that too.
