Apprenticeships can be started at any time. This programme will take a minimum of 12 months to complete.

Entry requirements
  • You will need to be at least 16 years of age and hold three GCSEs at grade 3/D, plus GCSE English at grade 3 and GCSE maths at grade 4 or above
  • You will need to find an employer to employ you as an apprentice. Please see our Apprenticeship vacancies.

  • Level 2 NVQ Performing Engineering Operations (Mechanical)
  • Level 2 VRQ Diploma in Engineering Technology
  • Intermediate Apprenticeship Certificate

Course overview

The Improving Operational Performance apprenticeship equips learners with the basic skills and knowledge to carry out a range of mechanical engineering processes at semi-skilled and operator level.

Course content

You will study all the mandatory units listed below. You will also study:

  • Employment, Rights and Responsibilities (ERR) booklet
  • Level 1 Functional Skills in English and maths
  • Personal Learning and Thinking Skills (PLTS)

  • QPEO2/001: Working safely in an engineering environment
  • QPEO2/002: Working efficiently and effectively in engineering
  • QPEO2/003: Using and communicating technical information
  • QPEO2/005: Producing components using hand fitting techniques
  • QPEO2/011: Preparing and using lathes for turning operations
  • QPEO2/054: Carrying out heat treatment of engineering materials
  • QETI/001: Engineering environment awareness
  • QETI/002: Engineering techniques
  • QETI/003: Engineering principles
  • QETI/015: Engineering maintenance planning
  • QETI/016: Engineering materials processes
  • QETI/017: Fitting and assembly techniques

How will I be assessed?

You will be assessed by your assessor using a portfolio of evidence, practical demonstrations and assignments. You will be assessed both in College and in your place of work.

What equipment will I need?

You will be required to provide paper, writing materials, A4 ring binder file, extra wide dividers and clear plastic wallets.

Where will I study?

You will study within the workplace and attend classes at Barnsley College’s (STEM) Science Technology Engineering and Maths Centre, Old Mill Lane, Barnsley, S70 2LA.

What can I do next?

Upon completion you could progress onto the Advanced Apprenticeship in Engineering or apply for job roles including:

  • Metal Operative
  • Machine Operative
  • Maintenance Operative

How much does the course cost?

There is no cost to being an apprentice. All costs associated with your apprenticeship, including the cost of training and your salary, will be paid by your employer.

English and Maths

Having good English and maths qualifications are important for most careers and we want to give you the help you need to succeed.

If you are aged 16 – 19 and don’t already have a grade C/4 or above in GCSE English and maths they will automatically be included in your study programme. If you want to work towards higher grades in English and maths or a higher level maths qualification we can help you do that too.
