Start Date / Duration

You can start an apprenticeship at any time. This programme will take a minimum of 24 months to complete.

Entry requirements
  • Learners will need to be at least 16 years of age and have completed the Level 2  Apprenticeship in Electrical Engineering
  • You must also hold four GCSEs at grade 4/C or above including GCSE English (grade 4 or above) and maths (grade 5 or above)
  • You will need to find an employer to employ you as an apprentice. Please see our Apprenticeship vacancies.

  • Level 3 NVQ in Mechanical Manufacturing
  • Level 3 BTEC Diploma in Engineering
  • Advanced Apprenticeship Certificate

Course overview

This apprenticeship will provide you with the skills and knowledge to take on a range of roles in the manufacturing sector. You will cover a variety of principals and processes such as component manufacture and using a range of skills from hand-fitting to complex CNC machines.

Course content

There are two pathways available. You and your employer will choose the pathway you will study. You will then study all of the mandatory units and choose from the optional units relating to your job role. You will also study:

  • Employment, Rights and Responsibilities (ERR) Booklet
  • Level 2 Functional Skills in English, maths and IT
  • Personal Learning and Thinking Skills (PLTS)

You will also study a Level 3 BTEC Diploma in Engineering covering the following;

  • Health and safety in the engineering workplace
  • Communications for engineering technicians
  • Engineering project
  • Mathematics for engineering technicians
  • Mechanical principles and applications
  • Electrical and electronic principles
  • Engineering design
  • Properties and applications of engineering materials
  • Engineering drawing for technicians
  • Numerical control CNC programming
  • Engineering secondary and finishing techniques

How will I be assessed?

You will be assessed by your assessor using a portfolio of evidence, practical demonstrations and assignments. You will be assessed both in College and in your place of work.

What equipment will I need?

You will be required to provide paper, writing materials, A4 ring binder file, extra wide dividers and clear plastic wallets.

Where will I study?

You will study within the workplace and attend classes at Barnsley College’s (STEM) Science Technology Engineering and Maths Centre, Old Mill Lane, Barnsley, S70 2LA.

What can I do next?

Upon completion you could progress onto the Higher Apprenticeship in Engineering Technology or apply for job roles including:

  • CNC Machinist
  • General Machinist

How much does the course cost?

There is no cost to being an apprentice. All costs associated with your apprenticeship, including the cost of training and your salary, will be paid by your employer.

English and Maths

Having good English and maths qualifications are important for most careers and we want to give you the help you need to succeed.

If you are aged 16 – 19 and don’t already have a grade C/4 or above in GCSE English and maths they will automatically be included in your study programme. If you want to work towards higher grades in English and maths  we can help you do that too.

Need a higher level maths qualification? We offer a Level 3 Mathematical Studies (Core Maths).
