Course overview

This fun and exciting course is for you if you are seeking a career in the media industry and/or progression to higher education. The course allows you to explore a wide range of media subjects and to gain practical and theoretical knowledge of the concepts and processes involved. You’ll experience working in radio production, photography and video and television production. You’ll also learn and develop a broad range of media skills and understanding of the production processes involved in the media products you will create. Media concepts, audience research and industry investigation support the practical areas of the course, which will allow you to make realistic media products such as TV shows, radio programmes, short films and music videos.

Course content

This course aims to introduce you to a learning journey into the exciting area of media production in a wide range of subjects including Film, Games and Interaction. You could get the chance to broadcast on Barnsley College Television, Barnsley College Radio and even have your products shown in the USA via Harbor College Television based in Los Angeles.

You may also have the opportunity to demonstrate skills in:

  • Photography
  • Games Design
  • Digital Media e.g. Animation/Video Production

How will I be assessed?

You will be assessed on a mixture of practical work, coursework and exams.

 

What equipment will I need?

No equipment is needed although learners are encouraged to utilise laptops and tablets in an interactive learning environment.

What can I do next?

Employment: This course can form the foundations for future study and work in this industry.

Education: You may progress onto an Extended Diploma course at Barnsley College in an area of Media such as Games Design,Television and FilmCreative Interactive MediaCreative Photography or Broadcast Journalism, if you achieve a Merit grade in your Diploma. Many students who take this course progress to a Level 3 course and then to university.

How much does the course cost?

16 – 18 year olds

Full-time Barnsley College students aged 16-18 years old do not have to pay tuition fees.

19+ Students

Aged 19 or over and thinking about further education?

You may be eligible for free or reduced course fees . Please refer to our page ‘paying for your course.’

English and Maths

Having good English and maths qualifications are important for most careers and we want to give you the help you need to succeed.

If you are aged 16 – 19 and don’t already have a grade C/4 or above in GCSE English and maths they will automatically be included in your study programme. If you want to work towards higher grades in English and maths or a higher level maths qualification we can help you do that too.
