Start Date / Duration

This course started on 10 January 2023. Applications are still being taken. The course will run until Thursday 22 June 2023. Classes will take place on Tuesday and Thursday evenings between 6.00pm and 9.00pm.

Entry requirements

The course is suitable if you are a complete beginner or if you have some previous knowledge.

You will achieve

City and Guilds certificate in Multi-Trade (6219) This will give you the skills and confidence to carry out small domestic household repairs.

Course overview

This practical course will enable you to increase your Bricklaying, Plastering and Carpentry and Joinery skills.

The course is suitable if you have some previous knowledge, or if you are a complete beginner. You can study in order to be able to carry out DIY in the home or with a view to undertaking a formal Construction qualification.

Course content

You will study basic elements of Bricklaying, Plastering, Carpentry and Joinery including:

  • How to mix and apply plaster and rendering and carry out small repairs to damaged walls.
  • How to build small brick structures, e.g. barbecues, garden walls, gate posts.
  • Safe use of power tools, basic hand tool skills, timber product repairs and replacement.
  • Tiling repairs and replacements for kitchens and bathrooms.
  • Safe working methods and Personal Protective Equipment.

Highly trained trade experts will teach, train and coach you in each area and give you positive feedback on ways to improve. They will support your progress and set tasks that will stretch and challenge your skill levels.

Each trade area will have a practical assessment you will need to complete to a good standard in fixed timescale. You will have a task book with a marking criterion set for each practical area.

All tools and equipment will be supplied. All Personal Protective Equipment will be provided and must be worn.

After gaining a City and Guilds certificate you could study a full Level 2 trade qualification with us (link to courses).

You could also:

  • Enter semi-skilled employment as a handyperson or caretaker.
  • Study an apprenticeship (you will need an employer to do this).

How much does the course cost?

£450. Adults in receipt of benefits may be eligible to study for free.
