This course starts in September 2020 and will be completed in one year.

Entry requirements

  • Four GCSEs at grade 2/E or above including GCSE English
  • A positive school report
  • You will also be required to demonstrate your musical skills at interview

You will achieve

UAL Level 1 Introductory Award/Diploma in Music and Performing Arts.

Course overview

This introductory study programme provides you with a foundation in music. You will learn the basics in music and develop the overall confidence needed to aid progression onto further education.  This very practical course aims to provide understanding of and opportunities to develop within the music industry. Throughout the course you will develop your instrumental, performance, composition and recording skills.

Course content

The Introductory Diploma provides a hands on experience of all aspects of performing, from music performance to developing acting and dance skills. You will learn about working in the performing arts industry and what skills are needed to be successful. There will be lots of opportunities to put on performances and showcase your work as both a solo performer and as a member of a group.

You will be assessed through performances, practical demonstrations and through course work activities.

You will need to have pens, paper and appropriate clothing for practical activities. If you play an instrument you may need to have access to this as well on occasion.

Upon successful completion of the Level 1 Introductory Diploma you can progress onto a Level 2 Music, Performance and Production 

How much does the course cost?

16 – 18 year olds

Full-time Barnsley College students aged 16-18 years old do not have to pay tuition fees.

19+ Students

Aged 19 or over and thinking about further education?

You may be eligible for free or reduced course fees . Please refer to our page ‘paying for your course.’

Barnsley College has a range of sports opportunities for all students to take part in, gain professional training and compete nationally and internationally. You don’t have to be studying sport to get involved in the Sports Academy.

Having good English and maths qualifications are important for most careers and we want to give you the help you need to succeed.

If you are aged 16 – 19 and don’t already have a grade C/4 or above in GCSE English and maths they will automatically be included in your study programme. If you want to work towards higher grades in English and maths  we can help you do that too.

Need a higher level maths qualification? We offer a Level 3 Mathematical Studies (Core Maths).
