Entry requirements

Level 1 Certificate

  • Successful interview with an initial assessment in English and maths at Entry Level 3 or above.

Level 1 Diploma

  • Three GCSEs at grade 2/E or above including English and maths
  • Successful interview with an initial assessment in English and maths at Entry Level 3 or above

You will achieve

  • Level 1 Certificate or Diploma in Construction Skills (Plastering)
  • GCSE/Functional Skills in maths and English

Course overview

Plastering serves a protective function, in that it makes buildings more robust. It is a skilled job and there is a high demand for good plasterers.
Plasterers mix and then paste plaster onto the interior surfaces of buildings to prepare them for decoration. They work on a range of buildings including houses and commercial buildings.



Course content

To achieve the Level 1 Certificate you must achieve a minimum of 15 credits, 3 credits from the mandatory unit and a minimum of 12 credits from the optional units.


Introduction to health and safety in construction


  • Preparing background surfaces and applying render coats
  • Introduction to the construction industry
  • Preparing background surfaces and applying finishing coats
  • Mixing materials and applying floating coats
  • Producing components from moulds
You will also complete a level 1 Employability Certificate

To achieve the Level 1 Diploma in plastering you must achieve 42 credits from then following mandatory units;

  • Principles of building construction, information and communication
  • Prepare background surfaces and mix plastering materials
  • Apply scratch coats to internal backgrounds
  • Fixing sheet materials
  • Applying floating coats to wall
  • Applying setting coats to wall
  • Health, safety and welfare in Construction


Throughout the study programme your work will be assessed for a Pass, Merit or Distinction grade. Achieving this diploma means that you have reached the standards expected by the industry.

Work boots, gloves and eye protection will need to be purchased prior to starting your course, financial assistance may be available.

  • Successful completion of Level 1 Certificate study programme could lead to progressing onto the level 1 Diploma
  • Successful completion of the diploma could lead to the Level 2 study programme.
  • Alternatively, you could use the qualification to improve your chances of gaining an apprenticeship which will give you valuable work experience.

How much does the course cost?

16 – 18 year olds

Full-time Barnsley College students aged 16-18 years old do not have to pay tuition fees.

19+ Students

Aged 19 or over and thinking about further education?

Having good English and maths qualifications are important for most careers and we want to give you the help you need to succeed.

If you are aged 16 – 19 and don’t already have a grade C/4 or above in GCSE English and maths they will automatically be included in your study programme. If you want to work towards higher grades in English and maths  we can help you do that too.
