Three GCSEs at grade 2 or above including English and maths or successful interview with an initial assessment in English and maths at Entry Level 3 or above

Course overview

Plumbers fit, service and repair hot and cold water systems, and heating systems in homes and businesses. They also work with gas fires and cookers. If you want a varied job that makes good use of your practical skills and takes you out and about, this could be perfect for you. You will need to be good at solving problems, have the ability to follow technical plans, and understand the importance of health and safety. You’ll also need good customer care skills.

If you do not have an apprenticeship, you can do our level 1 and Level 2 full time courses in Plumbing. This will equip you with many of the skills needed for the job and will help you when applying for an apprenticeship.  This will take you two years. Afterwards to become a fully qualified plumber, you would need to do an apprenticeship for the level 3 , which can take up to to two years.

Course content


To achieve the Level 1 Certificate in Construction Skills (Plumbing)  learners must achieve a minimum of 15 credits

  • Introduction to health and safety in construction
  • Removing and refitting water-filled radiators
  • Working with non-manipulative fittings
  • Introduction to the construction industry
  • Bending and jointing copper pipes
  • Connecting pipes and fittings to appliances
  • Constructing combined frames
  • Installing rain water goods
  • Working with low carbon steel pipes and fittings




On line unit assessments plus practical assessments.

You will need safety footwear, overalls, writing materials, drawing equipment and paper.

Successful completion of  Level 1 can lead to progression to the Level 2 Diploma in Plumbing studies or an apprenticeship.


How much does the course cost?

16 – 18 year olds

Full-time Barnsley College students aged 16-18 years old do not have to pay tuition fees.

19+ Students

Aged 19 or over and thinking about further education?

Having good English and Maths qualifications are important for most careers and we want to give you the help you need to succeed.

If you are aged 16 – 19 and don’t already have a grade C/4 or above in GCSE English and Maths they will automatically be included in your study programme. If you want to work towards higher grades in English and Maths we can help you do that too.

Need a higher level Maths qualification? We offer a Level 3 Mathematical Studies (Core Maths).
