The course will commence in September and there will be various start dates throughout the year. This course runs for one academic year.

Entry requirements

  • There are no formal entry requirements but you will be assessed to make sure that the programme is suitable for you. You must have a willingness to learn and commitment to seeking employment.
  • Aged 18 or over

You will achieve

You will work towards developing your Employability and Work Readiness Skills, gain significate work experience to increase your employability opportunities, a reference from an employer, a Level 1 or Level 2 qualification in Employability Skills, Functional Skills and or Maths and English GCSE, where appropriate.

Course overview

Are you aged 18 or over? Do you prefer to learn in a practical way? Would you like to gain work experience with an employer and develop the skills needed to get a job? If you started something but had a change of mind, realised it wasn’t for you or perhaps feel that classroom learning isn’t where you feel most comfortable – we’re here to help! Whatever your circumstances let us support you to take that next step into the world of work. Our new Routes 2 Employment one-year programme will help you develop the skills needed to prepare you for gaining employment or an apprenticeship.

Course content

You will spend one or two days a week in College where you will receive support from a tutor and up to four days a week with an employer. College staff will help you find a suitable work placement in an area of work that interests you.

The programme could include:

  • Work placement in a sector matched to your interests
  • Job search
  • Creating a CV and filling out application forms
  • Interview techniques
  • Building confidence and resilience
  • Developing organisational skills
  • Problem-solving
  • Wellbeing and social development
  • Enterprise and self-employment
  • Getting ready for work
  • Personalised English and Maths qualification (if needed)

The programme will enable you to develop your CV, gain significant work experience and a reference from an employer. It will help you develop a positive mindset and open up potential employment opportunities in order to build yourself a brighter future.

Practical work experience, coursework, exams where appropriate for Maths and English.

How much does the course cost?

This course is free for 19+ students subject to them meeting the requirements of the college’s fee waiver policy

16 – 18 year olds

Full-time Barnsley College students aged 16-18 years old do not have to pay tuition fees.

Having good English and Maths qualifications are important for most careers and we want to give you the help you need to succeed.

If you are aged 16 – 19 and don’t already have a grade C/4 or above in GCSE English and Maths they will automatically be included in your study programme. If you want to work towards higher grades in English and Maths we can help you do that too.

Need a higher level Maths qualification? We offer a Level 3 Mathematical Studies (Core Maths).

This can be added to your study programme.
