This course starts in September and will be completed in one year.

Entry requirements

  • Two GCSEs at grade 4 or above plus GCSE English at grade 3 or above.
  • Or successful completion of the Level 1 Diploma in Sport along with a favourable student review (attainment, attendance, punctuality, and attitude) Plus GCSE English at grade 3.
  • You will also require an active involvement in sport, health and/or fitness.

You will achieve

GCSE English and Maths and a Barnsley College certificate on completion.

Course overview

This course has been designed to help you understand the skills and knowledge needed to progress into a career in the sport and active leisure industry. You will focus on working towards GCSE English and Maths, be encouraged to participate in a wide range of sport and active leisure activities and study a range of sport and fitness.


Course content

The modules you will study include;

  • GCSE English
  • GCSE Maths
  • Access to Gym Instructing
  • Access to Massage with Anatomy and Physiology
  • Practical Team Sport and Leadership
  • Preparation for Employment and Personal Development
  • Volunteering in Sport and Work Placement

Assessment will occur continually throughout the programme. You will have unit assignments to complete and will be assessed on your practical and coaching ability. You will also have time-constrained assignments, as well as oral presentations. You are also required to undertake externally set and moderated assignments which will comprise a number of written tasks. Each individual unit and the full award are graded at Pass, Merit or Distinction.


All Sport and Public Services students will be expected to wear a Barnsley Sports Academy (BSA) hooded top* and polo shirt*, along with dark tracksuit bottoms and sports trainers. During practical sessions, kit will consist of a Barnsley Sports Academy t-shirt*, dark shorts and sports trainers.

Non-regulation clothing/footwear is not permitted. Students will also require ring-binders, writing materials, and paper/stationery and core textbooks.

Barnsley Sports Academy clothing marked with an asterisk(*) can be purchased from the Sports Academy reception.

On successful completion of this programme students will be considered for progression onto a second year of Access to Employment in Sport and Active leisure, an apprenticeship or employment with training.


How much does the course cost?

16 – 18 year olds

Full-time Barnsley College students aged 16-18 years old do not have to pay tuition fees.

19+ Students

Aged 19 or over and thinking about further education?

Barnsley College has a range of sports opportunities for all students to take part in, gain professional training and compete nationally and internationally. We also have a state-of-the-art fitness village, Honeywell Sports Village where students can make use of our fitness suite, spinning studio and classes for competitive rates. You don’t have to be studying sport to get involved in the Sports Academy.

Having good English and Maths qualifications are important for most careers and we want to give you the help you need to succeed.

If you are aged 16 – 19 and don’t already have a grade C/4 or above in GCSE English and Maths they will automatically be included in your study programme. If you want to work towards higher grades in English and Maths we can help you do that too.

Need a higher level Maths qualification? We offer a Level 3 Mathematical Studies (Core Maths).
