This course starts in September and will be completed in two years.

Entry requirements

  • You will require five GCSEs at grades 4 or above including GCSE English, together with a good school report
  • Alternatively, you will have successfully completed the Pearson BTEC Level 2 First certificate in Sport with a merit/distinction profile
  • You will also be required to complete a favourable interview, which will include several practical sessions
  • As your studies will involve you working with and coaching children, you will be required to undertake a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check (formerly known as Criminal Record Bureau check)

Course overview

The course will be aimed at high level performers who wish to further both their academic and sports performance within a professional, progressive and developmental environment whilst embarking on a relevant and flexible programme of academic study.

Course content

The programme consists of lectures, practical sports and coaching activities. You will be required to participate in oral presentations, field trips/residential, visits, tutorials, individual research and group work. In addition to general class work, you will be expected to use a range of textbooks for research purposes, as well as the IT facilities in the Learning Resource Centre. There will also be a variety of opportunities for you to gain additional qualifications including coaching, leadership and fitness instructing awards. You will also receive three or four training sessions each week and will be considered in the selection process to represent one of the College’s teams on match days.

You will also be given the opportunity to obtain Functional Skills qualifications in ICT, English and/or maths at an appropriate level.


Assessment will occur continually throughout the programme. You will have unit assignments to complete and will be assessed on your practical ability. You will also have time-constrained assignments, as well as oral presentations. Each individual unit and the full award are graded at pass, merit or distinction.



All Sport and Public Services students will be expected to wear a Barnsley Sports Academy (BSA) hooded top* and polo shirt*, along with dark tracksuit bottoms and sports trainers. During practical sessions, kit will consist of a Barnsley Sports Academy t-shirt*, dark shorts and sports trainers. Non-regulation clothing/footwear is not permitted. Students will also require ring-binders, writing materials, paper/stationery and core textbooks.

This qualification is designed to enable candidates to progress to Higher Education either in the UK or in the USA via a scholarship, alternatively you may wish to enter employment within the sports industry.


How much does the course cost?

16 – 18 year olds

Full-time Barnsley College students aged 16-18 years old do not have to pay tuition fees.

19+ Students
