This course starts in September 2019 and will be completed in one year.

Entry requirements
  • 2 GCSEs at grade 4/C or above plus GCSE English at grade 3/D or above
  • Or successful completion of the Level 1 Diploma in Sport along with a favourable student review (attainment, attendance, punctuality, and attitude)
  • You will also require an active involvement in sport, health and/or fitness

Course overview

This qualification has been designed to help you understand the skills and knowledge needed to work in the sport and active leisure sector.
You will be encouraged to participate in a wide range of sport and active leisure activities. Through participation you will be required to demonstrate your ability to prepare for the activity, teamwork, time management, and health and safety.

Course content

You will develop your knowledge of sport through the Level 2 Certificate. In addition you will study a further qualification preparing you for employment in the sport and active leisure sector. There will be opportunities to gain a range of work related and volunteering experiences, as well as a formal qualification relating to your intended career.

How will I be assessed?

Assessment will occur continually throughout the programme. You will have unit assignments to complete and will be assessed on your practical and coaching ability. You will also have time-constrained assignments, as well as oral presentations. You are also required to undertake externally set and moderated assignments which will comprise a number of written tasks. Each individual unit and the full award are graded at pass, merit or distinction.

 

What equipment will I need?

All Sport and Public Services students will be expected to wear a Barnsley Sports Academy (BSA) hooded top* and polo shirt*, along with dark tracksuit bottoms and sports trainers. During practical sessions, kit will consist of a Barnsley Sports Academy t-shirt*, dark shorts and sports trainers.

Non-regulation clothing/footwear is not permitted. Students will also require ring-binders, writing materials, paper/stationery and core textbooks.

Barnsley Sports Academy clothing marked with an asterisk(*) can be purchased from the Sports Academy reception.

What can I do next?

On successful completion of this programme students may be considered for progression onto a Level 3 Certificate in Sport or this course can form the foundations of employment within the sport and active leisure sector.

How much does the course cost?

16 – 18 year olds

Full-time Barnsley College students aged 16-18 years old do not have to pay tuition fees.

19+ Students

Aged 19 or over and thinking about further education?

You may be eligible for free or reduced course fees . Please refer to our page ‘paying for your course.’

Barnsley College has a range of sports opportunities for all students to take part in, gain professional training and compete nationally and internationally. We also have a state-of-the-art fitness village, Honeywell Sports Village where students can make use of our fitness suite, spinning studio and classes for competitive rates. You don’t have to be studying sport to get involved in the Sports Academy.

English and Maths

Having good English and maths qualifications are important for most careers and we want to give you the help you need to succeed.

If you are aged 16 – 19 and don’t already have a grade C/4 or above in GCSE English and maths they will automatically be included in your study programme. If you want to work towards higher grades in English and maths or a higher level maths qualification we can help you do that too.
