Start Date / Duration

The course will start on 1 March 2022 and will be delivered on Tuesdays and Thursday evenings 6.00pm-9.00pm for 11 weeks.

Entry requirements

You will need to have a Level 2 Fitness or Exercise Instructing based qualification.

You will achieve

  • Active IQ Level 3 Diploma in Personal Training
  • 20 CPD points to maintain your REP’s (Register of Exercise Professionals) status

Course overview

This qualification gives you the knowledge and skills to work with individual and groups of client in a personal training setting. Successful achievement of the qualification will allow the you to gain employment within an organisational setting, or alternatively in a self-employed environment.

Course content

Barnsley College offers this highly popular and comprehensive Personal Training course, which will enable you to gain 20 REP’s CPD points on completion. If you are a Gym Instructor wishing to pursue a career in the health and fitness sector as a Personal Trainer, then this course would be ideal for you. The qualification will also provide some initial guidance should you wish to become self-employed and look to run your own fitness training business. This course is suitable for any fitness professional looking to advance their knowledge and skills, update their Continuing Professional Development and increase their scope of practice with clients.

You will study the following units:

  • Anatomy and Physiology for Exercise and Health
  • Applying the Principles of Nutrition to a Physical Activity Programme
  • Programming Personal Training with Clients
  • Delivering Personal Training Sessions

The course will be predominantly delivered through practical workshops. A variety of flexible delivery strategies will be used to accommodate each individual’s learning style. A significant amount of learning is home study, working with individuals to plan and deliver a six week progressive programme of fitness development. Whilst not essential, it is advantageous that you are currently working in a gym where you can practice your learning. This is a highly desired professional qualification and you will be expected to adhere to industrial standards. The course assesses both theoretical and practical knowledge and understanding.

As a student within the Department of Sport and Public Services you will be expected to wear appropriate sports/fitness clothing at all times. Jeans and non-regulation tops are not allowed. You will also require all necessary writing materials, ring-binders and paper/stationery.
