Sports Development Level 3 Apprenticeship

In Brief

Start Date / Duration

This is a flexible programme and can start at various times throughout the year and will take a minimum of 18 months to complete.

Entry requirements
  • You should have achieved the Level 2 Sports Apprenticeship in Active Leisure and Learning, although applications will be considered on an individual basis
  • Learners will need to be at least 16 years of age and hold two GCSEs at grade A*-C
  • It is desirable that you have GCSE English and maths at grade 4 or above but this is not essential as Functional Skills is delivered as part of the apprenticeship programme
  • You need to be employed within the sport and fitness industry or have an employer in this area willing to take you on as an apprentice

  • As your programme may involve working with and instructing children, you will be required to undertake a satisfactory Disclosure Barring Service (DBS) check

Course overview

Sports development aims to improve access to sport and physical activity for people of all ages and abilities, develop communities through the use of physical activity for people of all ages and abilities, develop communities through the use of sport and physical activity and address wider social inclusion agendas. The work is challenging and varied and may include the development of performance sport, community sport and physical activity and /or participation for particular target groups. Sports development involves organising projects, programmes, information and training to encourage people to increase their activity and have a healthier lifestyle or participate in their community.

Course content

You will study all the mandatory units listed below and chose from optional units until you reach a minimum of 94 credits. You will study:

  • Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Sports Development
  • Level 3 Certificate in Sports Development
  • Level 2 Functional Skills in English and maths
  • Level 3 Award in Employment Awareness in Active Leisure and Learning

Mandatory units

  • Manage own resources and professional development
  • Contribute to strategic development in sport and active leisure
  • Provide leadership in sport and active leisure
  • Promote equality and diversity in sport and physical activity
  • Ensure the health, safety, welfare and security of customers and staff

Optional units

  • Facilitate community-based sport and physical activity or support the development of sport and physical activity in education
  • Develop productive working relationships with colleagues and stakeholders
  • Apply for external funding for sport and physical activity
  • Manage a project
  • Work with others to improve customer service

How will I be assessed?

You will be assessed by your assessor using a portfolio of evidence, practical demonstrations and assignments. You will be assessed both in College and in your place of work.

What equipment will I need?

All Sport and Public Services students will be expected to wear a Barnsley Sports Academy (BSA) hooded top* and polo shirt*, along with dark tracksuit bottoms and sports trainers. During practical sessions, kit will consist of a Barnsley Sports Academy t-shirt*, dark shorts and sports trainers. Non-regulation clothing/footwear is not permitted. Barnsley Sports Academy clothing marked with an asterisk (*) can be purchased from the Sports Centre Reception. Students will also require ring-binders, writing materials and paper/stationery.

Where will I study?

You will study four days per week within the workplace with one day attendance at Barnsley College Sports Academy, Honeywell Sports Centre, Honeywell Lane, Barnsley, S75 1BP.

What can I do next?

Upon completion you could apply for job roles including:

  • Sports Development Officer
  • Sports Leader/Co-ordinator

How much does the course cost?

There is no cost to being an apprentice. All costs associated with your apprenticeship, including the cost of training and your salary, will be paid by your employer.

Barnsley College has a range of sports opportunities for all students to take part in, gain professional training and compete nationally and internationally. We also have a state-of-the-art fitness village, Honeywell Sports Village where students can make use of our fitness suite, spinning studio and classes for competitive rates. English and Maths

Having good English and maths qualifications are important for most careers and we want to give you the help you need to succeed.

If you are aged 16 – 19 and don’t already have a grade C/4 or above in GCSE English and maths they will automatically be included in your study programme. If you want to work towards higher grades in English and maths or a higher level maths qualification we can help you do that too.
