This course will start again from September 2019 and will run on Tuesdays (course) and Wednesdays (assessment) 5.30pm-9.30pm and also 7 Sundays from 9.00pm-5.00pm. This course will run for 16 weeks.

Course overview

Barnsley College offers this highly popular and comprehensive Level 3 qualification to enable you to gain the practical and theoretical skills necessary to provide Sports Massage Therapy. It will provide you with the requisite knowledge, understanding and skills to work in an unsupervised capacity as a sports massage practitioner with non-pathological (non-injured) tissue. Alongside the Sports Massage Level 3 you can also gain a qualification in Sports taping and First Aid.

The Kinesio Taping Method is at the forefront of fascial, lymphatic, and muscle research. The Kinesio Taping Association International is a worldwide organisation and regulates the teaching of Kinesio Taping courses worldwide.

This first aid course aims to provide candidates with a sound knowledge and understanding of first aid procedures when working in leisure venues and aims to build skills and knowledge of first aid incidents. It is also a requirement for fitness professionals who affiliate with the Register of Exercise Professionals (REPS) and a pre-requisite for sports coaching. The course will be delivered through practical workshops, and will enable you to:

Course content

Sports Massage – you will study the following units:

  • Anatomy and physiology for exercise
  • Principles of exercise, fitness and health
  • Anatomy and physiology for sports massage
  • Assisting soft tissue repair
  • Professional practice in sports massage
  • Assessing clients and treatment planning
  • Applying sports massage techniques
  • Providing post-treatment care

Sports Taping – you will study the following:

  • Introduction to the Kinesio Taping method
  • History
  • Tape properties & comparison
  • The effect of Kinesio Taping on physiology, inflammation and proprioception
  • Relevant anatomy and palpation for taping
  • How to cut and apply the tape safely
  • Taping for a variety of common areas: neck, shoulder, wrist, back, knee and foot

First Aid – you will study the following:

  • Understand the role and responsibilities of a first aider
  • Know how to assess an incident
  • Manage a variety of different casualties

How will I be assessed?

The course will be predominantly delivered through theoretical and practical workshops. A variety of flexible delivery strategies will be used to accommodate each individual’s learning style. A significant amount of learning is home study, working with individuals, planning and performing sports massage treatments. The course assesses theory, practical knowledge and understanding using a variety of examination types.

What equipment will I need?

As a student within the Department of Sport and Public Services you will be expected to wear appropriate and professional clothing at all times. Polo shirts and track suit bottoms are mandatory for all lessons. Jeans and non-regulation tops are not allowed. You will also require all necessary writing materials, ring-binders and paper/stationery.

What can I do next?

You can become self-employed and run your own sports massage therapy business or work in spas, fitness centres, sports clubs, hotels and leisure outlets. You may wish to progress to Active IQ Level 4 Certificate in Sports Massage. This qualification is also complimentary to the Active IQ Level 3 Certificate in Personal Training.
