Entry requirements

You must have:

  • GCSE English at grade C/4 or above or equivalent qualification, such as Level 2 Functional Skills, Adult Literacy or Key Skills.
  • A Level 3 qualification such as A Levels, a BTEC National Diploma or a National Vocational Qualification (NVQ).
  • Employer support and at least one year’s volunteering or work experience.

Course overview

This degree is suited to people who support the development and learning of children and young people, including those with additional needs, within the multi-agency environment. Typically, students work in schools, children’s centres, childcare and youth services, young offender and other services.
You will further your understanding of how best to create and maintain positive conditions for learning, underpinned by research and theoretical understanding, grounded in current legislation and informed by reflective practice alongside a critical awareness of individuals’ rights. You will develop your professional knowledge and awareness which underpins working experience.

Course content

The course runs on Monday and Wednesday evenings from 5.00pm to 8.00pm for two years.

On this course you will study a range of modules which may include:

  • Working in a Multi-agency Environment
  • Communication and Language (School)
  • Working with Families or Working with 21st Century Children
  • Introduction to Special Educational Needs (SEN) and Disability or Inclusivity and Diversity
  • Supporting Children with SEN and Disability
  • Research-informed Practice in Educational Settings
  • Children, Families and Social Policy or Play and Early Learning
  • Developing Social and Emotional Resilience or Understanding Children’s Behaviour
  • Leading and Managing or Developing Literacy

A variety of assessment methods are used which are matched to the student outcomes for the programme. This will enable you to demonstrate the full range of knowledge and skills you have developed. You will take part in workshops, seminars and lectures. Work will be assessed on reports, presentations and essays.

Graduates can progress to the BA (Hons) Professional Practice: Education Studies Top-up course. Some eligible candidates may apply for teacher training routes.

How much does the course cost?

Course fees: £5,995 per year.

We offer a service to any  student who has a diagnosis of anything persistent or long-term which might interfere with how they study and manage their day-to- day academic engagement. The service is flexible and shaped around the needs of each individual; it might be consistent support or intermittent support.

A Maintenance Loan of up to £6,904 per year will be available to eligible students living with parents or up to £8,200 per year to those living away from home. EU Students cannot apply.

Students with children or dependant adults may qualify for a Childcare Grant or Adult Dependants’ Grant. Students can apply for these at the same time as applying for a Maintenance Loan.

Remember: Eligible students will not have to pay tuition fees in advance and can apply for the Maintenance Loan before they start the course.
