This course has various start times throughout the year and will take 16 weeks to complete.

Entry requirements
  • You must be aged 16-24 and qualified below a full Level 3
  • You are not currently in employment and have little work experience, but you are focused on work or the prospect of it
  • You will normally take part in an interview prior to being enrolled on the programme

Course overview

A Traineeship is an education and training programme with work experience that is focused on giving young people the skills and experience that employers are looking for to get an Apprenticeship or other job, within 16 weeks of starting the course. The Design Stage 1 Traineeship provides a rounded experience of this sector, allowing you to identify the pathway that best suits your skills and strengths.

 

Course content

  • Work placement with the design and print industry
  • Design principles and software
  • Printing and graphic communication
  • Self-Development for your career
  • Job search and application forms – paper based and on line
  • CV Building, Covering Letter and E Mailing
  • Interview techniques – positively selling yourself
  • Qualities and attitudes needed by employees
  • Communication, body language and vocal qualities
  • Customer service techniques

You will also study:

  • Functional Skills Level 1 in English and maths

 

How will I be assessed?

You will be assessed by your assessor using a portfolio of evidence, practical demonstrations and assignments. You will be assessed both in college and in your place of work.

  • All equipment will be provided
  • Travel expenses will be met by Barnsley College
  • Meals will not be provided

What can I do next?

Upon completion you could progress onto a paid role, potentially an apprenticeship, in graphic design or an associated field.

You could progress onto the Level 2 Intermediate Apprenticeship in Design or apply for job roles including:

  • Junior Designer

How much does the course cost?

Under current legislation, all people serving an apprenticeship must be employed. In financial terms, this means that apprentices should be paid at least the minimum statutory pay for apprentices and contractually employed on a full-time basis. This is the cost to employers. See information below for further information about the Apprenticeship Levy.

16 – 18 year olds

Full-time Barnsley College students aged 16-18 years old do not have to pay tuition fees.

19+ Students
