Traineeship for Business Level 1 Full-time

In Brief

Start Date / Duration

There are various start dates for the course. You will study at College for one and a half days per week. You will then go on a work placement for up to four days per week, and attend College one day per week. The traineeship will last up to 24 weeks.

Entry requirements

  • You must be aged 16-24 and qualified below a full Level 3
  • You are not currently in employment and have little work experience, but you are focused on work or the prospect of it
  • You will normally take part in an interview prior to being enrolled on the programme

You will achieve

  • Work Preparation Level 1
  • Functional Skills English Level 1 or Level 2

Course overview

A traineeship is a course with work experience that gets you ready for an apprenticeship or other employment within six months of starting the course.


Course content

The course will cover the following areas:

  • Applying for a job
  • Searching for a job
  • Preparing for an interview
  • Interview skills
  • Learning from a work placement
  • Work based experience
  • Managing personal finance
  • Oral presentation skills
  • Reading and writing skills

Your work placement will be in one of the following vocational settings: Business, Customer Service or Retail. You will be allocated a placement by college.


Completion of work books that are assessed and lead to certification.

Functional Skills English Level 1 or Level 2 is assessed through two externally marked exams and a formal discussion and presentation both internally marked.

You will be required to provide paper, writing materials, A4 ring binder file, extra wide dividers, clear plastic wallets and a memory stick.

After completion of the Traineeship, you could enrol on to one of the following Apprenticeships:

  • Business Administration Apprenticeship Level 2
  • Customer Service Apprenticeship Level 2
  • Retail Apprenticeship Level 2
  • Warehousing Apprenticeship Level 2

How much does the course cost?

16 – 18 year olds If you hold a full level 3 qualification this means you are not eligible to study a Traineeship programme. Please contact the Information Team for further information. 19+ Students 19-24 year olds studying a traineeship are only funded if they hold a full Level 1 qualification or below. Learners who are 24+ are not funded on a traineeship programme.

16 – 18 year olds

Full-time Barnsley College students aged 16-18 years old do not have to pay tuition fees.

Barnsley College has a range of sports opportunities for all students to take part in, gain professional training and compete nationally and internationally. We also have a state-of-the-art fitness village, Honeywell Sports Village where students can make use of our fitness suite, spinning studio and classes for competitive rates. You don’t have to be studying sport to get involved in the Sports Academy.

Having good English and Maths qualifications are important for most careers and we want to give you the help you need to succeed.

If you are aged 16 – 19 and don’t already have a grade C/4 or above in GCSE English and Maths they will automatically be included in your study programme. If you want to work towards higher grades in English and Maths we can help you do that too.

Need a higher level Maths qualification? We offer a Level 3 Mathematical Studies (Core Maths).
