Vehicle Maintenance and Repair, Light or Heavy Level 3 Apprenticeship

Start Date / Duration

Apprenticeships can start at any time. This programme will take a minimum of 24 months to complete.

Entry requirements
  • Learners will need to be at least 16 years of age and must have completed the Level 2 Intermediate Apprenticeship in Motor Maintenance and Repair
  • You must also hold four GCSEs at grade 4/C including GCSE English (grade 4 or above) and maths (grade 5 or above)
  • You will need to find an employer to employ you as an apprentice. Please see our Apprenticeship vacancies.

  • Level 3 VCQ in Vehicle Maintenance and Repair
  • Level 3 VRQ in Vehicle Maintenance and Repair
  • Advanced Apprenticeship Certificate

Course overview

These qualifications are for anyone interested in starting or developing a career in the motor industry, whether you want to maintain and repair different types of vehicles (cars, vans, trucks, or even motorcycles), fit and replace parts and tyres, run your own car valeting business or work on hybrid vehicles safely.

Course content

You will study all the mandatory units listed below. You will also study:

  • Employment, Rights and Responsibilities (ERR)
  • Level 2 Functional Skills in English, maths and ICT
  • Personal Learning and Thinking Skills (PLTS)

Mandatory Units

  • Health, safety and good housekeeping in the automotive environment
  • Job roles in the automotive work environment
  • Materials, fabrication, tools and measuring devices used in the automotive environment
  • Diagnosis and rectification of vehicle auxiliary electrical faults
  • Diagnosis and rectification of light vehicle engine faults
  • Diagnosis and rectification of light vehicle chassis system faults
  • Diagnosis and rectification of light vehicle transmission and driveline faults
  • Inspecting light vehicles using prescribed methods

How will I be assessed?

You will be assessed by your assessor using a portfolio of evidence, practical demonstrations and assignments. You will be assessed both in College and in your place of work.

What equipment will I need?

You will be required to provide paper, writing materials, A4 ring binder file, extra wide dividers and clear plastic wallets, and relevant PPE.

Where will I study?

You will study within the workplace and attend classes at Barnsley College’s (STEM) Science Technology Engineering and Maths Centre, Old Mill Lane, Barnsley, S70 2LA.

What can I do next?

Upon completion you could progress onto further training relating to your role or apply for job roles including:

  • Motor Vehicle Diagnostic Technician

How much does the course cost?

There is no cost to being an apprentice. All costs associated with your apprenticeship, including the cost of training and your salary, will be paid by your employer.

English and Maths

Having good English and maths qualifications are important for most careers and we want to give you the help you need to succeed.

If you are aged 16 – 19 and don’t already have a grade C/4 or above in GCSE English and maths they will automatically be included in your study programme. If you want to work towards higher grades in English and maths or a higher level maths qualification we can help you do that too.
