The course begins on Wednesday 19 April 2023 The course lasts for 10 weeks and you will study on Wednesdays from 5.30pm to 7.30pm.

Entry requirements

There is no requirement for you to have achieved any qualifications or units prior to undertaking this qualification, however a reasonable standard of digital skills will be required.

You will achieve

You will receive a Barnsley College certificate of completion. 

Course overview

Do you regularly capture a series of videos but find yourself unsure how to piece them together? Or maybe you watch films and want to know a little more about behind the scenes? If so, this is the course for you.

You will learn the most important functions and techniques of digital video capturing and editing including shot types, framing, camera settings, post-production techniques and publishing.

This course will get you one step closer to capturing and editing those unforgettable moments, whether this is on your mobile or with a DSLR camera. You can use the skills learned on this course and apply them immediately in your daily life or even begin a career in digital video production.

Course content

A series of sessions you take you through all the basics of capturing and editing to improve your skills, knowledge and composition.

On this course you will be introduced to:

  • Capturing footage
  • Styles and techniques of video editing
  • Composition and shot types
  • Editing techniques
  • Software and app investigation
  • Exporting your footage into an edited piece

Towards the end of the course, you will create a small project demonstrating your new skills.

By the end of the course, you should be able to:

  • Capture footage using certain shot types
  • Use the correct composition methods
  • Edit and manipulate video for a project

The course will cover elements of post-production techniques using the appropriate industry standard software, such as Adobe Premiere Pro, as well as mobile technology.

You will be assessed using a range of methods such as practical tasks and written coursework within a portfolio of evidence. This portfolio will be used to assess your progress on the course.

You can use the skills gained to produce and edit videos and could explore further study in digital video production.

Having good English and Maths qualifications are important for most careers and we want to give you the help you need to succeed.

If you are aged 16 – 19 and don’t already have a grade C/4 or above in GCSE English and Maths they will automatically be included in your study programme. If you want to work towards higher grades in English and Maths we can help you do that too.

Need a higher level Maths qualification? We offer a Level 3 Mathematical Studies (Core Maths).
