First aid in the community

Barnsley College employee, Arran Mccallum, has gone the extra mile to help the local community by becoming a first-aider and volunteering at St John Ambulance Service.

Arran works full-time as a Plastering and Bricklaying Technician at the College’s Construction Centre where he provides students with a valuable insight into the world of Construction. In his spare time Arran volunteers as a Unit Manager at the Oakwell Unit of St John Ambulance.

He regularly attends a range of public events including Barnsley Football Club match days, music festivals and sporting events. Arran is the first port of call for any medical emergencies and uses his first aid knowledge and experience to help people who require medical attention.

Arran stated: “First aid is so useful and important. Knowing what to do in an emergency can be the difference between a life lost and a life saved. The fact that I can make a difference and help to save lives is extremely rewarding.
“We would love more volunteers to help us as a charity and assist us on events that we cover. No previous training is required and a full uniform will be provided.”
