Groundbreaking Ideas to Real-World Impact

Our students recently participated in a wide range of workshops and listened to guest speakers during the College’s Engineering Industry Week.

Over the course of the week, students heard from speakers across a range of professional backgrounds. This included talks from the Royal Navy on how important engineers are to the forces, Designer Ben Williams from Open 2 Design spoke about product engineering and Gavin Day UK Organisational Development Manager at Masonite gave a short talk and then ran an interactive session looking at continuous improvement.

To wrap up the week students listened to a College talk on Apprenticeships and The University of Huddersfield came in and set the students a bridge building task using paper straws and sticky tape before testing the build strength by dangling weights from them. Amco Giffen gave a talk about what services they offer in engineering and ran an activity around interview skills.

The sessions were organised by the Enterprise Team at Barnsley College. Talent United and Enterprise Coordinator Catherine Hirst, said: “Our Engineering students have experienced a week packed full of activities that are really engaging.

“Students heard from a wide variety of industry experts and take part in workshops around careers in this sector.

“Thank you to all our guests, staff and students for another brilliant Industry Week.”
