Posted: 28/01/2025
Our Horticulture students had an incredible opportunity to visit Oakwell Stadium, home of Barnsley FC, where they gained a fascinating behind-the-scenes look at the expertise, dedication, and cutting-edge techniques involved in maintaining a professional football pitch.
During the visit, students were guided by Barnsley FC’s experienced grounds team, who shared valuable insights into the science of pitch care.
They learned about the different types of grass seed blends used to create a durable and high-performance playing surface, as well as the importance of aeration, irrigation, and seasonal maintenance strategies to ensure the pitch remains in top condition year-round.

The students also had the chance to see specialist machinery in action, including mowers, aerators, and line-marking equipment, gaining a first-hand appreciation of the level of precision required to meet the standards of professional football.
Carlo Turner, Horticulture tutor at the Wigfield Farm campus, expressed his gratitude for the opportunity, stating: "A huge thank you to Barnsley Football Club for this valuable experience and for supporting the next generation of horticulture professionals. Opportunities like this provide our students with essential industry knowledge and inspire them to pursue careers in sports turf management and horticulture."
