Barnsley College employee, Daniel Scott, has won the Learning Technologist of the Year Individual Award at the Association for Learning Technology (ALT) Awards 2016.

The prestigious award ceremony that was held at the University of Warwick, celebrates and rewards excellent practice and outstanding achievement in the learning technology field and promotes intelligent use of learning technology on a national and international scale.

Daniel is committed to lifelong learning. Since leaving secondary school in 2002 with little formal qualifications, he has been motivated to learn and develop his skills, so he can inspire others who are in a similar position to him, to achieve their career goals.

Daniel’s professional career started in 2005 when he secured employment at the college as a Level 2 Business Administration Apprentice and he has never looked back.

In February 2010, Daniel started in his role as a Learning Support Technologist and his self-motivated learning journey of understanding and practising teaching and learning technology began. Going above and beyond his job role, Daniel demonstrated a longing for teaching and sharing his knowledge with the next generation of Learning Technologists. This passion impressed his manager and they committed resources and support to enable him to complete a range of training courses, most recently graduating from the University of Huddersfield with a MSc in Technology Enhanced Learning, so he has a deeper and richer understanding of how teaching can be delivered and utilised through digital technology.

Daniel said: “I am extremely proud and overwhelmed at winning this prestigious award. It’s such a good feeling to be recognised both nationally and internationally for my individual efforts and milestones that I have achieved throughout my career. This award is also recognition of the hard work, and the support I have had from the college to develop, so we as a team can continue to utilise learning technology in the classroom to benefit all students.”

Karen Markham, Director of Teaching and Learning at Barnsley College added: “I am really pleased and happy that Daniel has won this award as it recognises his passion for technology and the journey he has undertaken in his own professional development with support from the college.”
