The Mayor of Doncaster, Ros Jones, will officially open the new Construction Skills Village in Doncaster at a launch event taking place on Thursday 23 March.
The new Skills Village is a collaboration between Willmott Dixon Construction, Northern Regeneration and Barnsley College and will provide local people in Doncaster with the opportunity to develop their skills and knowledge within construction in order to address the skills shortage and close the gap between education and the construction industry, whilst providing employment opportunities for them after they finish their course.

“The Skills Village is an exciting and innovative approach bringing education and industry together. It provides an excellent opportunity for students to gain invaluable experience of industry working practices and ensure that, at the end of their course, they are ready for employment. We look forward to welcoming the Mayor of Doncaster to officially open the Skills Village.”

The new Skills Village is based next to the National College for High Speed Rail site in Doncaster, currently being built by Willmott Dixon. Students will work on a ‘live’ construction site and gain first-hand experience of working on a construction build from design to finish, whilst developing their skills in a range of construction trades including groundworks, painting and decorating, plastering, bricklaying, plumbing, carpentry and joinery.
The Mayor of Doncaster will officially open the Skills Village in a ribbon cutting ceremony and, along with invited guests, will take a tour of the site to see students working in training areas on a number of construction activities and find out how the practical industry experience gained at the Skills Village will help to prepare students for a career in construction.

Anthony Dillon, Managing Director of Willmott Dixon Construction – Northern Region, said: “We are delighted to be working in collaboration with such great partners who share our enthusiasm and drive to promote and encourage people into an industry that has such a positive impact on people’s lives.”

Graham Ratcliffe, Managing Director at Northern Regeneration, said: “Northern Regeneration, alongside partners Willmott Dixon and Barnsley College, are looking forward to the official opening of the Doncaster Construction Skills Village. The Skills Village is a fantastic opportunity to identify and recruit new talent locally to help address the skills gap. On site, students will experience ‘real life’ training and gain genuine work experience and employment opportunities.”

Barnsley College Principal Christopher Webb added: “The Skills Village is an exciting and innovative approach bringing education and industry together. It provides an excellent opportunity for students to gain invaluable experience of industry working practices and ensure that, at the end of their course, they are ready for employment. We look forward to welcoming the Mayor of Doncaster to officially open the Skills Village.”
