Modern Methods of Construction Training Centre shortlisted for South Yorkshire Property Award
Posted: 29/05/2025
Barnsley College’s state-of-the-art Modern Methods of Construction (MMC) Training Centre, developed in collaboration with T3 Training and Development and Laing O’Rourke, has been shortlisted in the Sustainability and Social Impact category at the 2025 South Yorkshire Property Awards.
The nomination recognises the College’s commitment to sustainable construction practices and its role in supporting social mobility and local regeneration through industry-focused skills training.
The training centre is the first facility of its kind in the UK, and is the first purpose-built facility to offer a Level 2 Apprenticeship in Construction Assembly Installation in the country – teaching methods that are faster, safer and more efficient than traditional construction practice.

The facility, part-funded by the Local Skills Improvement Fund (LSIF), provides people with the technical and digital skills required to assemble construction and engineering solutions that have been manufactured offsite.
This includes giving learners, ‘Trainee Assembly Specialists’, access to the equipment and skills needed to work with large-scale modular components in a safe and controlled environment as they learn how to deliver sections of some of the UK’s largest infrastructure and construction projects.
David Akeroyd, Principal and Chief Executive of Barnsley College, said: “This shortlisting is testament to the hard work and ambition of our staff and partners, and the potential of our students. The Modern Methods of Construction Centre is more than a training facility - it’s a catalyst for opportunity and a showcase of what’s possible when education and industry come together.”
Winners of the South Yorkshire Property Awards will be announced at a ceremony in Sheffield on 9 July 2025.
